Title: Rat hunting
Post by: djhogdogger on September 27, 2012, 03:02:34 pm

One of our 4 month old pups has started hunting and killing barn rats. I mean big ol rats the size of small opposums! Its pretty disgusting but I hope that it means she has lots of prey drive.  ;D

Her name is Shy and the name suits her well. Can barely get her to come to us. But I like it.

Reuben, I am hoping for the gamy part.  ;D

Bryant, well if she turns into a possum dog at least it will be a change from our skunk dogs.  ;D

You need to join ETRD. its a rat dog forum. I'd reward him for every rat he brings in. Sounds like a good dog.

we should all be so lucky to have a 4 month old catching its own game, be it rats, hogs or coons, great job!

Dinah it sounds like y'all need to have a good ole' 'Rat Killin' around your place. If done properly it's a hoot and a half. You can include your dog in this if you want. We've had several at my buddy Alan's place at his chicken pens. Been a few times that he and I have killed over 100 in one afternoon......we shoot 'em, whack 'em with a piece of conduit, mash 'em, stomp 'em......or whatever you can do to kill 'em. Makes for a fun day to say the least.

me and my brothers as kids used to kill them off on the farm until we about wiped them out and then we would do it all over again...we filled the holes full of water with a water hose and when we saw the waves coming up the dogs were ready and they caught and killed most of the rats and my brothers and I got a few with sticks or whatever...like you said...it was a ton of fun...  :)

That's what we do Reuben....they den in the ground I reckon,.....so we put the water hose in a hole and get ready. It's a wild fracus around there for awhile but about as fun as it gets. We'll clean out a bunch of them and then they repopulate and it's time to do it all over again. ;D

Thats sounds like the way Buck dancing was invented. It must have started at a rat stompin. I lifted a board out by our grain bins one time and about 6 mice took off in different directions. I was buckdancing till I got em all stomped.
