Just an off the wall random question, but why is it that dogs howl at a siren?? I live about a half mile off the highway, and almost every night there are emergency vehicles going by with the sirens blaring. My dogs go into full song when the sirens are going. I personally find it pretty funny and entertaining when the dogs are singing their song, but I know my wife doesn't find it as funny, and I imagine my neighbors don't enjoy it as well.

Just wondering what it is about the sirens that makes the dogs howl like they do.

Iv been told that sirens produce a paticular wavelength pitch that hurts their ears n the howlin is a scream in agony. I dont know the truth to it and for some reason my dogs wont tell me why they howl.  ;D

The old Gyp i used to have that had real houndy ears used to do it, the ones i have no couldnt care less about a siren, so I have no idea.

My own personnel studies have shown that dogs are buttholes and they want to make sure your awake at 3am to hear them.

ha ha i agree with ryan  lol . but if you wanna kill yotes . blast a siren and locate them . used to have one that you cranked and we would wind it up to locatee yotes before setting up and calling .

Dogs howl together to show the strength of the pack. I asume sirens sound like a pack and the dogs are responding the way they know how.

I would not agree on hurting the dogs ears I watch this same responce every time sirens come by my place the dogs do not look in any discomfort they actually get excited and start howling all together

Lat yr during the fire season when i was hm from the sand box, the volunteer fd would come screamin down the roadn a couple dogs would shake their heads n paw at their ears and would nvr howl, but some of the others would howl n shake their heads.

It does make sence though the whails of the sirens would immulate a pack howling dogs n a pack would howl in an attempt to communicate.

I have never seen them look in discomfort in any way when hearing sirens, but that might just me my pack...

My dogs howl when the siren is a mile away. Hard to believe its hurting their ears from that distance. I always figured it was similar pitch to dogs howling.

Same at my place, i have a rail road 500yds from my front door and fire station 750yds and mine ALL howl at the sound of either. I dont think it hurts their ears personally, i may be wrong tho

funny, one of my dogs did this last night when a fire truck drove by...........The other dogs didnt care.
I do not think it hurts them. The frequency that hurts their ears are the ones we cant hear at all.

All I know is that the only times my dogs ever howl there is a siren. It may be too far for for me to hear but I always know before I hear it when a siren is coming my way. For me I have a neighbor that sends their yip yap dog out to do it's business at midnight and three A.M. every night. Then two dogs go crazy barking at the yipping. Until I turn on the back light and then they quiet for some reason ;D But the sirens I just can't stop them from howling. I guess they are just hard wired for sirens?

Mine wont howl but they bark at the sirens. The neighbors bird dogs howl. All the other dogs in the neighborhood just bark. I think if it hurt their ears they would get in their dogs house or under the porch to get away from it.

I do know that dogs here a higher frequency that we can not hear...I also know that they hear quite a bit better than we do...the frequency we hear from the sirens is low enough that we can  hear it but I wonder if they also emit the higher frequency we can not  hear. Just because a dog doesn't shake his head and run in the dog house does not mean it is not unpleasant to the dogs ears...

about a month ago I ordered a devise that has 2 different frequencies that breaks the dogs from barking...one frequency we can hear but the other is higher so that we as humans can not hear it but the dogs can...well the dogs looked normal to me but they quit barking after a few days but I have quit using it because the 9 volt battery runs out pretty quick...I am in the process of converting it to a 12 volt and will add a solar panel to keep the battery charged...I will post the results I see in the dogs as well as the reliability of the dog bark eliminator as soon as I see the results...

Reuben, I can't sleep and am looking through some of my old posts. You ever come up with any solid results on your dog barking device?? I can shut my dogs up pretty quick, but it would be nice if I didn't have to get out of my recliner to do it.

We planned to convert the bark eliminator to 12 volts using a resistor but I never could fine tune it to work right with the built in 9 volt system...so I didn't bother with converting and I just don't use it...I stayed with the red ryder and my dogs are pretty silent...

This just made me chuckle outloud.  Thanks.

I don't know about sirens! My pack howls together every morning when I pull out for work. I didn't know this until I was off of work for Foot surgery and my wife drove my truck. Every morning same thing a low howl by all dogs in the kennels for about a minute. I think it's like Joey said it's a pack thing.. JMO

a couple of mine howl at sirens, and the whistlin of the bushog blades when I pass by them. Weird thing is after a hunt, when i chain them up and feed them, Ill walk back toward the house and hear them all start howling.

train sets them a howling at my house , they seem more exited then in pain . my catchdog goes to dry humpin the air .maybe its a mateing call! lol..  wish they would do that howl when they strike a hog. lol maybe i need some hounds ...

My AmBulldog is over 6 yrs and has never mounted a gyp, when his hormones start kickin he just randomly starts humpin air(what a weirdo   ;D ;D)

When my 8 mth gyp came in heat for the 1st time, his kennel was bout 30 feet from hers, and he would howl a whole lot (he never howls). It was funny and sad at the same time..... for about 3 days, he would have his moments and howl in a soft, quiet, and low tone. Poor poor guy- >:( >:( :'( :'(
