Title: Hog Hunting with Terriers
Post by: quickfire on November 15, 2012, 10:50:50 am
I have several Jack Russells, a few Patterdales,a few FL curs and a Catahoula.

Just want feed back from those who have terriers or small fiest. Do you run them with your curs and if so how do you turn them out?

If you ever have full pups out of the terrier pats or jacks let me know. Or any that are just young dogs.

We run Patterdales. The one's we have will bay a larger hog until back up arrives and then they'll catch. If it's a smaller hog, they will catch. Don't plan on using anything else. We are hoping to add a Jagd to the pack though.

Thanks for the feed back. How many do you put on the ground at the time.

for quite a few yrs our main strike dog was my partners rat  and we have another rat who is strikin now.when we had little we mainly walk hunted and  he struck most our hogs.he has also had many rats that were just pack or second dogs.  he also has a jaag pup now too that is wound tighter than a tick. we hunt the rats with the big dogs , be they loose or ruff.

I keep jagd terriers. I love em. I turn em out in sign or on track with my plotts. They r the pits to trash break and don't have much trouble with that since I quit just free casting them.

One. We'll set him down on fresh sign, and he knows what he's looking for. Once he finds it, we send in a CD.
They are terriers, so they will kill what they can as fas as small game goes (nutria, etc.) , but if you have fresher hog sign in the area, and you set 'em on it, they know exactly what they're they're for and will go to business. They are very fun.....

I had 2 great little jagds, if timing/situation was different I would still have em, they hunted great with my currs. They were both awesome dogs and started finding hogs at 7mths old. I recently was lucky enough to pick up three more from the same kennel/line. Cant wait to see how they turn out!

Well atleast your working and that's not long.  Let me know when you get off and we'll do some hunting.  I'm heading down this week so I'll stop by one evening.

I ran 3 of my Jacks and 1 patterdale with my strike dog and a buddies curs this weekend in a 500 acre pen that is regularly stocked with hogs. The Jacks had fun and wear beating the palmetto bushes looking for everything. My main Jack has been on coon, possum, ground hogs and rats since he was a puppy so it woul dbe almost cruel to trash break him at this age but I think I will run them in fresh sign and see how things turn out.
