Just wanna get an opinion on what your favorite hog calibers are.....list 'em for me.....and NO "pit" and "dogo" are not calibers!!! :o ;D

open country my 30-06 because that is my ol trusty. i kill all kinds of criitters with that ol beater. lol.
while doggin i just recently began carrying a .357 for safty never realy was handgun guy but practiced until i felt confident now it is a part of my gear.
will always prefer shootin them with the mathews bow !!!!!!!!!!!!

.308 Win - 125 gr Speer TNT

stand i use a 223 cal. but in the brush we use a 243 cal. but my buddy uses a 45-70 cal. 300 grain

small calibers.....  .223, .204, and .22 hornet.....all deadly. 

I'll nearly alway's reach for my 30-06. If that ain't available it's gonna be the .270. I use 165grn bullets in the '06, and 130grn bullets in the .270.

.22 i am that good ;) :D   I have killed most of my 5 or so hogs with a gun with a .243 but i got a 308 and a new 2800 deer lease that is covered in pigs and i looked forward to using it on them ;)

What do you like about these rigs, and what don't you like?

My wife is relatively recoil sensistive, so I got her an 1894C with an AO lever scout rail and low power leopold scout scope. It seems like a servicable little rifle and has almost zero recoil... seriously, my 10-22 has more felt recoil. Anyway, even though in theory I bought it for her to shoot pigs with, I've never been able to work up the nerve to actually take it into the hog woods because it just seems so underpowered.

I've thought about getting myself a matching 1894SS in 44mag so I'll feel like, I don't know, more ethical or something shooting a good size boar with the bigger slug. But then I get to thinkin' if it's ethical for her to shoot a pig with it, why wouldn't it be ethical for me to do the same thing. I don't know if there is a right answer... it just feels likes its different somehow.

What do y'all think?

That is the exact model I have. My kids love to shoot it and do with no problem. The only problem I have everfaced with the gun is the spring has worn out twice probaly my fault for always leaving it loaded with it filled to its capacity. I had trouble keeping the shells pushed back in order to reload the shell. at times it would jam and not allowthe shell to enter the chamber to it in to get replaced it was fine. My brother has the 44 mag in the trapper edition neat and deadly gun just very loud.

Mine is a stadard edition Marlin and like what was already mentioned the gun is easy to carry, easy to shoot and pretty dang accurate.  The recoil is little to none as far as I am concerned but the noise factor can be a little high.

I use three guns. Up close and quick shooting early Ruger .44 carbine, 50 to 150yds is a ruger mini-30 which has killed in excess of 150 hogs my most carried and past that remington .30-06. If I could find a pre 64 model 94 that some one would trade for the .44 mag carbine would have to give some serious thought as I like the carry and feel of the old .30-30 best of all.   John

When running my pack I use a m92 Rossi .357 and when I feel like doing some spot and stalk I got a Remington 742 Woodsmaster 30-06. No complaints yet!!

old sarge, is that early ruger one of the deerstalker carbines? that's a gun i've always covetted.

i use a 280 it is a 30-06 necked down 2 a 7mm bullet  there is little 2 no tracking with this gun

machine73, Yes it is the deerstalker. I don't know of the year but it is the model where they moved one of the scope mounts forward to the barrel and filled the rear screw holes. I think it is one of the last that they made. Short and light like carrying a 10-22. In fact a lot of  10-22 accessories swap with it.   John

There are clearly similarities between the deerfields and the 10-22. The magazines for example, are clearly built on the same design concepts:

WAARHEID, no it is not a scout configuration. Also the deerfield I am talking about is actually marked simply Ruger .44 magnum carbine. One of the earlier ones I had was marked something like deerslayer. This rifle is not built on the mini action. It was what Ruger copied to make the 10-22 I seem to remember and has a tube feed magazine not the rotary. Looks exactly like your photo of the 10-22 with out the scope mounted solely on the barrel in scout style.  John

sarge, yours has the tube fed mag? from what i can gather you prbably have the best .44 mag carbine ruger ever made. the one's stamped deerstalker were early runs and the one's just stamped .44 carbine were a bit more reliable. i bet you your gun predates the 10-22! awesome piece of firearm history. i'd love to have it myself. its even cooler that you still kill pigs with it. i hope whoever you pass that down to in the future really appreciates it.

i use 204 32grain balistick. in the brush i just use a pistal 38special

I used a .460 weatherby mag my dad bought at an estate sale pricey to shoot but open brushy behind the tree if it hitem they went down bout six months ago shot it and the stock busted in my shoulder. Haven't had it fixed yet. 500 soft point

just about every hog i shoot, i use a Remington Mohawk Model 600 in 6 MM or twin brother 243.

Pistol caliber would have to be .45acp loaded with some Barnes DPX bullets.  Rifle would be 6.8 SPC using SSA Combat Loaded Barnes Triple Shox.  Can't hardly go wrong either way.

It kinda depends on the mood, the terrain, and the hunt I will use anything from a 204 to a 7mm um or a 12 ga #4 buck for close range! ;D

Behind the dogs i carry a 40 S&W 155g speer, had to use it less than a handful of times.
In the field i use a 22-250 55g balistic tip hand loaded.

 brush i have used 45-70 and a 30-30 tons  open shooting 22-250 or 270 up close and personal  thumper my FMJ .45/410 loaded with buck shot  I have yet seen a hog argue  with that 2 inch barrel in his ear or at the base of the skull >:D

I carry a 357 revolver and a 12 ga. with slugs when hunting with dogs. A .222 or a 30-06 when just gun hunting.

my 45-70 is pretty much a shoulder fired cannon.i drop everuthing i shoot,wouldnt recomend on deer..destroys them bad.im in the marine corps and on one of our ranges i can hit anything with it all the way out to 800 yards no problem.its a nice gun.kicks hard though.for a single shot.

I usually just use my Remington model 700 .300WM, but I'm also partial to 12 gauge with buckshot and a .357 Magnum. At least until I get my dogs trained and can put the guns down when out of deer season.

Generally, I use my AR10 (.308) or my Mosin Nagant 7.62X54R. If I get up on the hog, I have a Sig P229 Navy... I'm partial due to my training as a squid.

rifles i like anything 30 caliber, partial to my 30-06 though (good in brush or open field) for pistols i like anything 45 caliber (acp, colt or 454 casull)

I prefer a smith and wesson  44 mag. pistol with 10 in. barrel carry it for protection while im hunting with my dogs.

in the open a bo;t action .308 in the thick stuff a 45-70 os a saiga in .308

rifle 30-30/ pistol 45. or 9mm just because it holds 32 rounds in the big clip (ever been there when the rally is on at nite you know what i'm talking bout)  taurus 92 with light and lazer mounted onit

I have killed everything i have shot at with my 243. But i love my 270.
