Title: Pregnant gyp
Post by: JCook on November 28, 2012, 02:55:26 pm
I will back my gyp had some pups she had two I thought was a lil strange but I know it's quite possible but my question is about feeding she won't ever let the pups nurse and when I feed her if her pups get to close she snaps at them I'm concerened for the pups safety is there anything I can do to make her feed them or does anyone have a clue as to why she is food aggressive to her own pups?

How old are the pups? If they're just a few days old its easy enough to keep them away from the feed bowl. Sounds like they're older?  If they are 3/4 weeks, start supplementing with milk replacer/puppy food mashed up. Is she drawn down? Getting plenty of feed herself? Alot of times a dog is just feed aggressive, nothing to do but keep pups away. Need a little more info.

Just how I supplement.... I had a litter of 12 once, gyp took care of them pretty good but I started supplementing at 3 1/2 weeks, some took to it better than others. I would mix up some milk replacer, put in blender, add puppy food and blend real good, almost like a shake. As the pups got older I would just back off the blending a bit, make it chunkier. By 5 weeks most were nibbling dry feed.

They will be 5 weeks Sunday should I just separate them from the mom and feed them by their selfs?

Yes, I would pull them. If you are not feeding them then you need to start ASAP.  Good Luck

Pull them or not, up to you, sounds like she has weaned them or is starting to. If they are outside, mother is still good heater : )
Just sepperate at feeding time and YES... Definitely start feeding pups.

have ya trimmed their toenails yet ? them little fish hooks tear the heck out of a gyp's udders and will make her soar and snappy towards the pups .
