What kind of range do they usually have, nose, grit, and stamina ?

Title: Re: bird bulls
Post by: buddylee on December 11, 2012, 12:03:26 pm
Honestly depends on the dog and cross. It's an EXTREMELY popular cross in Georgia. Most have excellent nose, stamina and plenty of grit. Lotta them are too rough. Some will run hogs for hours, some wont. I think if there were more bird/bulls and less "yella" dogs in Texas y'all probably wouldn't have such a bad hog problem ;)

I have a gyp of that cross that I bred to a mnt cur. Damn good dogs, and the pups always turn out to good help dogs. Don't think I've seen one as a lead strike dog though.

Most of the standard bulldogs I've seen look like Birdbulls LOL! Fine boned, long faced, drop eared. Maybe they're on that birdbull program LOL!

In south Georgia, they have been crossing American Bulldogs and bird dogs or pointers since the 1940's. Better than most curs I've seen. Have seen them as high as 3/4 bulldog.

I prefer a good game bred pit over an American bulldog any day. The pointer/AB crosses I've had couldn't hold a candle to a good pit/ pointer cross.

i was in thought of breeding a bird bull cross and i talked to a guy at 5l ranch in mississippi he is the vp of the dog hunters assoc. there thats what he runs and he swears by them he just said invest in good vest or your gonna have tore up dogs everytime they got no quit and theres no end to the bottom the way he told me they hunt is out about 600 to 1000 yrds in circles and that was his dog of choice i have some pups on the way out of my momma dog>pitt and my buddies pointer she was a jam up catch dog in her day and that pointer is 8 and still hunts with the best of em pretty excited about these pups

You my sir should have some darn good dogs in a couple years. Just remember that some start early and some are slow starting. Be patient I gave away a very slow starting dog and regret it. She was 2 before she turned on. Folks say she is an outstanding dog. Will run a hog till her pads wear off.

You're not gonna take a any pit to any bird dog and produce the dogs buddylee is talking about.  If it were that easy then everyone would own one. A good linebred/well bred game dog to another very athletic and hard hunting birddog gives you a chance to get the dogs you're looking for.

It's just like Cur dogs, find the best and hope the breeding works.

Try to find a good bred English pointer that are bred for hunting birds on big property...you cannot walk a field with these bird dogs... they use horses or jeeps....cross over a good bred Staffordshire or Pitt....no AB's!!

I have a Chinaman bred dog and a linebred Carver dog that I intend to use as studs. I am looking for a couple Elhew bred pointer females to cross them on.

buddylee , what do you recommend ..... female pit x male bird , or male pit x female bird ?   or does it matter ?  what have you had luck with ?

I've owned two and it was a game pit over a smaller Elhew gyp. The male is GREAT all around dog and the Gyp is just a brood dog to my knowledge. The male isn't suicidal but rough as Cobb and will try most everything, but 150 lbs or less is definitely caught!

I don't know about male vs female. Never thought about it. My main dog is a bird/bull. Got him from a friend. He never bothered asking. Had one that was pit over a pointer. Outstanding dog. Have a young pointer over pit but she's just started. Looks good so far.

cool thanks , reason i ask is cause when breeding dogos to cats to get the catdo cross , seems like they have a better turn out when they use a male dogo with a female cat !

ive been thinking about that cross have a friend with some very good pointers hunted with a bird bull female a few months back.she would range out to about 7/10 of a mile struck a nice hog with her. the old girl was very gritty. and had miles of stamina.have thought about crossing a bird bull into my bmc.

For range and hog which would y'all prefer gsp or English pointer?

We got bird bulls all around here!  Most the time its rednose/gsp cross. Super gritty with alot of hunt. I've hunted around a few they just catchy, Me personally I'd rather have a pit/cur cross instead of bird dog.

My neighbor down the road has a few gsp/bmc crosses. To me they ugly dogs lol but he likes em. does alot of huntin with em. Says good things, they've been in my bay pen before wasnt all impressive to me, nothing standoutish.

I do believe that the Campbell cur is a bird/bulldog cross. They're from down buddylee's way I think. Close friend has some and had a female that was an excellent hog dog but rough as a cob......surprised she lived to be an older dog. He's had several over the years....just like all breeds, some good ones, some not as good and some not worth fooling with. I had one I got from him as a pup, she just was slow to get started and had some weird ways that I didn't cater to so I gave her back to him. Like buddylee said though,....lost of the guys I know from south GA hunt bird/bulldog crosses and swear by them.....not at them. :D

I have seen people just breed a random bulldog to a random pointer and make some fine dogs. I got two full blooded gsps. Had some Campbell's. my hunting partner has a bird bull and a bird bull/ Campbell cross. Few guys around here run nothing but Campbell's. most are pretty catchy especially if two are together. Of course it's hard to beat a good line breed cur but its hard to beat the hunt of birdog. German shorthair,Weimaraner and English pointers. Never really delt with the setters
