Title: Ponder Post by: KevinN on December 18, 2012, 09:00:31 am What makes a dog a climber? I've had a few in the past and they ended up on chains. I have cattle panel kennels now (8 X 16) and I really don't want to use chains again. The gyp I'm referring to is big and leggy, 60 lbs or so. I was surprised to find out she was a climber. She jumps and hooks the top of the panel and scoots on over. I'm going to add 4 ft of welded wire to the top of the panels on her kennel to fix the problem (I hope). Oh, her sister, a smaller gyp will do it occasionally to but not near as much.
The fact that she gets out only disturbs me a little bit because I know I can fix it. It also impresses me a little, I think it shows intelligence. Anyway, just wondering what makes a dog want to climb when others are content. Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Whistler on December 18, 2012, 09:38:00 am Kevin. In the past two weeks that wendy pup i have has been out twice. No where she could have dug through only possibility was climbed out. I still wasnt convinced that was the case because its a 5ft. fence and shes only 7 months old. Anyway sunday i saw her she got her front two feet over and just pulled and climbed over. Looks like im going to have to put a hot wire around the top of mine.
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: KevinN on December 18, 2012, 09:40:53 am Lol, yep, I may end up doing the same around my dog yard so I can keep letting them out every so often. Did she go straight to the pig pen?
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Whistler on December 18, 2012, 09:54:32 am Yep. she was trying to dig in. Dont know why she doesnt jump that one is only 4ft.
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: KevinN on December 18, 2012, 10:00:04 am Yep, I was kind of thinkin the same. Cattle panels on my pig pen too. If I don't get her kennel fixed I'm gonna end up with dead pigs.
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Easttex91 on December 18, 2012, 10:34:23 am Are those yalls crawdad dogs? Mines rough as hell wants to catch all the time
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: halfbreed on December 18, 2012, 10:36:13 am well boy's i wouldn't own a dog that couldn't get over a fence .lol comes in handy in more ways than one while hunting for sure . kevein with the price of panels you can get you the cheapest little 3 mile charger and materials to run a hot wire around the top . if a dog wants out bad enough you can't make a fence high enough . i had a little walker male when i was just a wee one lol he could flat foot jump and catch the top rail on a 6 ' chainlink fence and go over .
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: SwampHunter on December 18, 2012, 10:36:26 am Make you cable runner down middle of pen an tye her in it my bulldog climbs out an one hound I have goes through squares so they have runners down middle to keep there buts in just gotta get the length right so they don't hang there self or get tangled up , I have 6 kennels that are all 8x16 an those are the only 2 dogs that get out
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: KevinN on December 18, 2012, 10:37:59 am Are those yalls crawdad dogs? Mines rough as hell wants to catch all the time I think whistlers is and for her age she IS ROUGH. Mines just an ol' mixed up gyp. Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Whistler on December 18, 2012, 11:06:39 am Are those yalls crawdad dogs? Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Medic727 on December 18, 2012, 11:47:19 am I dont know what causes it but sure wish i could fix it. I have a 3 month old walker pup that can climb out of whatever i put him in. I moved him in to a wire kennel and he pushed the top open enough to climb through it. I let him out to use the bathroom the other morning and walk outside and he is on top of the deep freeze!!! He is a little hard headed!! Lol[/url]
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: KevinN on December 18, 2012, 01:43:00 pm A roof helps with that! ;D I hear you. I built these kennels with that in mind. I used 8' - 4 X 4 post. Put the kennels together in a hurry because I had to. Just hadn't got around to the roof yet ;D Title: Re: Ponder Post by: charles on December 18, 2012, 05:13:29 pm Had yeller gyp do the same. She would climb a 6' kennel. Only thing that stoped her was a roof, till it blew off from a wind storm. Wife came hm from work n she was at the pig pen, she put on a cable lead so she could still nurse. I get hm, measure out enuf chain for her to get water n relieve herself, but give her to much. I got a call sayn she had hung herself. She finaly stoped climbing, but left 7 3.5wk old pups for me to nurse to term. A hot wire would fix the climbing, but i got a gyp who persists to dig. I cant catch her at it or i would shock her. Foot to butt aint workn either so i guess im gonna hav to burry some fencing. Any other ideas instead of waisting money on fencing that will just rust out?
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: T-Bob Parker on December 18, 2012, 05:46:51 pm I don't know about a dog climbing out of a kennel being a sure fire sign of it's intelligence. It is a sign that the dog is a sure fire pain in the butt.
Some dogs are smart enough to know you kenneled them because you didn't want them wandering around. Lol. Put some form of roof on it or just chain that dog Title: Re: Ponder Post by: BA-IV on December 18, 2012, 05:52:31 pm I chain most of my dogs so climbing ain't the issue, one of my dogs digs constantly and I hate it.
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: cward on December 18, 2012, 05:56:51 pm I have so many good stories about smart dogs kennels and chains.
I had a dog named turbo that would rub his snap on a tree until it would pop off. We watched him out the window he did this all the time. He became the yard dog. I came in from hunting one time and put the dogs on there chains i went to feed and two of my dogs had stretched themselves as far as they could at the end of there chains i relised I put them in the wrong spot not wear they normally go. Once I moved them they went and jumped in there barrels happy as they could be. Intelligence is all I can say. Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Reuben on December 18, 2012, 06:01:02 pm I chained a dog in a kennel with a nice up and coming pup...long story short the the chain wrapped around the pups mid section and when I got back in town the pup was dead in a sitting position...so be careful about chaining a dog in a kennel with another dog...
I was thinking that to stop a climber a tight cable needs to run parallel along on the inside of the top of the kennel about 6 or 8 inches to the inside...I think the dog will hang up trying to go over and will eventually give up trying to climb out... Title: Re: Ponder Post by: chads7376 on December 18, 2012, 06:18:35 pm It is a pain. Five of my dogs will jump and climb out of my six foot tall kennels. I ran a hot wire on top of all the kennels and this put a stop to all but one of em. If she gets excited and wants out bad enough she will take the hit and come on over. lol
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: Peachcreek on December 18, 2012, 07:10:43 pm My two gyps will jump out of my kennel with hot wires and all. They do it so fast i dont think the hotwire even gets a chance to pop them. I have two wires run above a five foot panel. I have another couple panels bought to put on top. Just need to get around to it
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: halfbreed on December 18, 2012, 09:27:37 pm trick is to not put it directly on top . i use the 5'' t-post insulators they run inside the pen 5'' around the top . sticking out that far henders the dog when it legs the top of the fence as well as nocking the fire out of them . never had one bail since i started using the long plastic insulators .
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: southtexasff on December 20, 2012, 08:21:43 am I got a dog that does the same thing. Before I put a top on his kennel he would climb the kennel by putting his paws in the openings and use it like a ladder. I tried putting plywood on top but with in a day or two he would find a way out. Started pissing me off cause he seemed smarter than me. I ended up putting another section of kennel on top to totally enclose it. I also have to put a clip on the kennel latch because he will bump it with his nose to open it. Its funny cause after I feed him and walk away I hear him messing with the latch to see if I forgot to secure it right.

He would bump the gate over and over until the latch would pop. Title: Re: Ponder Post by: heat on December 20, 2012, 01:58:59 pm I almost didnt want to tell this until somebody else did. I had 2 dogs that could open a chainlink latch and my buddy had their daddy and he could. I dont mean sometimes...I mean one gyp in particular could do it as fast as you could...wash out her pen, turn around to get a scoop of food, and you heard her hit the latch and u better be headed that way or she was gone. She was a very special plott dog and learned to go silent. When she was 10 months old you could put her on last nights track in the dirt road, and she would bark before she got out of the ditch. When she was 3 to 4 years old she went totally silent running shoats, but would bark on big hogs. By the time she was 5 or so she was silent until she jumped and then if the hog didnt stop, she would hush after about 20-30 minutes. I believe she had the ability to reason.
Title: Re: Ponder Post by: bigthickethogdogs on December 20, 2012, 05:32:45 pm KEIVIN i have a gyp right now that will climb out of any thing you put her in
what i do is run a short piece of chain through a 3'' one foot long pipe and snap it to her collar she can'nt climb with that pipe chained to her neck but i only keep mine in a pen when their in heat |
