A buddy told me that you can get a dog dna'd and they can tell you what breeds it's made of.  Has anyone ever heard of it?

Yes, but I believe it only recognizes AKC or UKC breeds. 

Dna is very popular in coonhounds. Dont know about the hog/cow dog stock????

  it ia a bunch of hoekum so far . dna is used to verify individual dogs in the coonhound      and registered breeds , but i think what he is asking is if dna will tell you what breed of dogs os in his mutts  :o ;D ;D   lol  . when they first started trying this dna breed identification it stirred up a bunch of mess i.e.  when you had a poodle tested it would come back with rottwiler and other mutts in it , wich really it should because all the dogs have a base ancestor the wolf . the data base is not near large enough as of yet . when you try and find the dna origin of us humans we all each and everyone of can be traced back to central africa .    so hello to all my brotha's out there  lol .

I have read a bunch of stuf since this thread popped up. From what I can find for the most part if u look at a dog and can see what breeds u think may be part of it u are just as good as the test. The most expensive test that uses blood says they can't identify pure bred dogs if u use their mutt mix test. While others have said to have sent in samples from from pure breds to get positive results back. If u have a cross dog and u are curiouse and don't mind spending the cash go ahead. The results may reinforce ur thoughts or ur cur or hound cur cross may come back as sharpae x Chinese crested. Who knows.

I have a jam up gyp that got bred somehow.  All of the strike and help dogs are crossed up many ways but I know the breeds in them. There is a chance she could have got locked up in the woods with a cd. If bred to a strike then I'll keep some, otherwise I'll sell as rcd's or bay dogs. No matter which they should be good for someone. Too good of a gyp to not raise them

I've been considering a DNA test myself lately...  I am trying to pinpoint a certain line of dogs... believe I can get close enough visibly to narrow it down, but would like to verify for sure with a test.  Let me know if any of yall find any concrete details on it.

  blueduck in a case such as yours all you have to do is dna each suspected sire and then dna the pups and that will tell you who the sire is . it can be done on individual dogs as far as sire and dame but not as far as wich breeds are in the makeup of a dog  .
