Title: Re: Training Scent Question Post by: southernhoghunter on June 14, 2009, 11:05:27 pm wat ive always done was take a small pig and let the pups start baying it and get someone to hold them and drag the hog off where they can see me hide it and let them go and find an bay for a few min but not to long as they may lose interest...just make the distances farther and the time bfore releasing the pups a lil bit longer each time....got this technique from the K-9 unit at the prison dwn the road from my house thats how they train their bloodhounds and they have won the state trials about 3 yrs running now

For rabbit what I found is actually the best is to get Croncks training scent, put it in a small spray bottle, take a freshly killed rabbit and spray it down with cronck's, then use the scented rabbit carcass as a training drag. Most dogs seem to find the combination of fresh/real scent and training concentrate very helpful and instructive. You could so the same thing with a sucker or shoate and some Cronk's pig training scent. STEP IT UP A BIT TIE A ROPE 2 THE HOGS LEG AND LET HIM WALK OFF INTO SOME COVER AND THEN TIE THAT ROPE 2 A TREE SO HE CAN STILL STAND UP AND LET THEM FIND HIM LIKE THAT. IT WILL TAKE THEM LONGER 2 FIND HIM BECAUSE THERE WILL BE LESS SCENT BUT THEY WILL NEED 2 LEARN 2 TRAIL A HOG WITH LESS SCENT THEN BEING DRUG ITS A LITTLE MORE REALISTIC 4 THEM AND IT IS HOW THEY WILL HAVE 2 FIND 1 IN THE REAL WOODS AND TRY NOT 2 DO THIS ON A WINDY DAY SOME TIMES THE SCENT WILL DRIFT 2 MUCH AND IT MAKES IT 2 HARD 4 A YOUNG DOG 2 WORK IT OUT AND THEY MIGHT LOOSE ENTREST
