Title: Puppy Observations
Post by: jimco on January 11, 2013, 12:27:54 pm
I was wondering if others have experienced this. I have 2  4 mth. old cat pups. They have been in the same pen together since 8 weeks.
I let them out in the evenings to run around and play. I let them come with me a couple times a week to feed the hog I have back in the woods. They are both males.  One day the brindle pup will be the dominant one , the next day the blue one will. One day the brindle will hit
the woods and get ahead out of sight and the blue one will hang back. The next time vice versa. If I say get ahead in a firm voice , both will go  ahead , but every day it's like one is gung ho and the other one isn't. Their never both gung ho at the same time. I thought maybe
they are still establishing a pecking order. They will be sleeping in the middle of the afternoon with one laying his head on the others back for a pillow and all of a sudden they will start tying arss  fighting for a total of like 5 seconds and then its over and they resume their nap.
I have witnessed about a dozen of these mini fights but there is never a clear winner. They are not the least bit aggressive with the other dogs on the yard.    I'm not complaining about any of the above. These are two very energetic pups. I'm just trying to figure them out.

Had 2 walker gyps once that were similar. One did end up the lead dog in a race but they never decided who was top dog. At about 3 years old one day they decided to figure it out. They nearly killed each other but neither was a clear winner. Ended up separating them to prevent fighting around house. On a hunt they were fine. I guess it just works that way sometimes. Neither one were aggressive toward other dogs and either dog was real good in the woods just blaze tended to end up at the front in a race regardless of who jumped first.

I've had two crossed up (1/2 Catahoula 1/4 Red Bone 1/4 Pitt) sisters since they were babies. They are a year old now. They have never flat out brawled. Honestly I don't remember much in the way of scuffling at all. With each other they have been fairly calm.

Like I said, they are crossed up and even though they are both blue leopard their is a BIG difference in their build. Bella looks like she 100% Catahoula but Alice is taller with a big blocky head. You can really see the Red Bone and Pitt in her.

As far as how they came on, Bella was the first one to start....but only by a few weeks. She also hunts harder than Alice at the present day. That being said, Alice is the rougher of the two and once a pig is struck she is right there at the bay and every time a hog is caught without the CD she is on the head somewhere, usually the snout (I'm sure that will change after a few cuts).

Anyway, that's how they came up.
