This boar over the last two years has been nick named "Lucky" because he only has three legs and two nasty bullet wounds in his right side. Lucky has made it through poachers, shooters, helicopters, many doggers and Me several times. I have found six dead dogs in the field Lucky calls home. Since I have never seen any big boars in there but him I figure it was his handy work. Lucky would never get very far from the fence line and had beat my dog Capstick to it several times in the past. But the one thing Lucky didn't plan for was a Great Dane named Riddick. Riddick struck from about a 1/2 mile away and closed the deal on Lucky about 100 yards from the fence line. This tuff boar never let out a grunt or any noise. My 12 year old neffue Hunter was along for this hunt and I am very happy that he could be apart of catching such a elusive boar. I will post more pictures in the morning and also the WWT score. Riddick walked away from this dog wrecker without a scratch.

L3,

Did the Riddick dog come from hunting lines, or is he a run of the mill Dane that is doing well on hogs? I ask, because it seems that a lot of dogs that were bred for large game have become watered down urban dogs. I would not know where to begin to find a dog like the Dane, Boxer, etc that are actually working.

Circle C, Riddick was a apartment dog until he was 14 months old. He is the seventh pure Dane I have hunted with and all of them made better than average dogs. None of the Dogs I have ever hunted with came from hunting lines. Since I don't hunt bay dogs its almost impossible to find dogs from hunting lines without importing them from Australia. Even then on the hard dogs I don't think you would have better chances of getting a good dog if you imported one from Australia. Riddick was not very interested in hogs when I first started training him, but I keep with it and one day the light bulb went on and he has been  one of the hardest dogs I have ever owned. I try to look at how the dog acts to see if they will hunt. If a dog is protective of his yard around strangers most of the time he will hunt with a little work.

L3,

Thanks, I was wondering about that. You mention above average dogs, what are the average dogs you speak of when comparing them to the danes you have raised or trained...Also, where does Riddick usually catch so that he is able to control a hog one his own?  Not trying to grill you, just curious about the different dogs and styles...

Joshua, That is one nice hog and one that due to his limitations would stand and fight. Glad Riddick is unscathed. I guess the only other thing to say is another one bites the dust. Good for you and Riddick.   John

Riddick and most of my dogs hold the top of the head. I have never seen him hold a ear its mostly the hole top of the head in his mouth. By above average I mean that they where the hole package. Lots of drive, good holders on large hogs, and very good finding abilities. It is easy to find dogs that will hold, but finding dogs that hold clean and are also good strike dogs is a little harder. I try to look for dogs that will hold the hog without making him fight more than is needed. A Lot of hogs will calm down after the first minute or two and if the dog just holds it is not uncommon to walk up and see the dog and hog just slowly walking in circles. I do not like a dog that makes the hog fight every time the hog gets still. This is why I don't own Dogo's or dogs with a lot of bull blood. There is an art to it and most dogs will do it naturally but I have found a few breeds that don't do very well as a "One Out" dogs. I have always said that super hard hold to the death type dogs do not make good "One Out" dogs. They have to be smart and hard. The combo is hard to find but when you do watch out they will surprise you over and over.

Do you run a garmin or something how do u know when they are caught 1/2 mile out it would be hard to hear anything? Or do you run behind the dog? Nice Pig ;D

No action or video of this one. We caught the boar in a mile by mile corn field that is six foot tall so Riddick had to use his nose until the last few feet of the chase. Yes I use a Garmin. I only started using one when they first came out before that no trackers at all. That's why I say hold to the death type dogs don't make good "One Out" dogs. The dog has to be smart enough to let go and come back if he is to tired to hold any longer, but still hard enough to hold any hog no madder the size. Here is a link to Riddick

That is a nice hog. Nice teeth.

What do you think happened to his leg? It looks like it is cut smooth off.

No dice. Went to the three certified scales in town and two where broken and one was out of town and would not make it buy the 48 hour dead line. I can only guess the weight to be 300+ because it took me and Hunter a hour of trying to get him loaded last night. I can load a 250lbs without help and this guy about wrecked me and Hunter. The leg has been missing from the first time I saw the hog two years ago in case I didn't write that very well. I also will be mounting this hog out of pure respect for an old warrior like him. He may not be the biggest we have caught but he has gained a lot of respect from me over the last two years.

I think it was buckshot from a chopper hunter. We have alot in our area. Infection and fly's probably got to it and the rest fell off. This skin was folded and grown back over it's self. His head and ears looked like he had shook off more than a few dogs in his life. Lots of old wounds on them.
