Title: Best lever gun for close range hogs
Post by: justincorbell on January 16, 2013, 10:41:23 pm
Anyone have any opinions or likes/dislikes about particular models? Any info is appreciated, been on the verge of buying one for quite a while, when I hunt by myself i normally ease in and shoot em.....im lazy haha, honestly I enjoy easin in with a gun and getting to watch the bay without dealing with my bulldog, just makes it easier. The places i hunt are all deer leases and i have to kill every hog i catch.......sorry, rambling.......anyway as far as lever guns go, which is your go to?

as far as round choice, .22 or .22mag is hard to beat...as far as model, i would say handle as many as possible to see what handles and shoulders the best to fit YOU.  Everyone is different, especially in a quick shot moment.  An old model 94 is hard to beat, but the Marlin's and Henry's should be able to be found cheaper.

Some of the guys I know carry 44 mag lever guns. Others I know carry 30-30. There is a Winchester teddy Roosevelt in the classified section right now. Killed my first solo deer with one just like it. Anyway I tote either a 22 semi auto or 22mag bolt. It's what I got. I also tote a 357 in case a head shot isn't offered.

357 mag, 44 mag or 30-30 in that order. Love the short barrel easier to manuver in the thick brush.

I agree with all calibers posted except the 357... It's had a tendency to pass all the way through pigs with me... Has very rarely happened with the 44.... Don't know if it's just me or if it happens with others but that's just my thoughts

I'd say the 357 for the fact you have two guns in one
when you don't want to pay the price for the 357 ammo 38SPL works just as good

I used to have a Rossi 44 mag lever action that carried in the woods.  Loved it!  You can get them in different calibers and they used to be comparetively cheap but I don't know anymore.

My vote is for the 357mag, mine is the longer barrell model, if I ws getting another it would be a carbine...if you use 125g hollowpoints they won't pass through...or don't for me anyway...past 2 trips I have fired 8 shots for 6 pigs all on the run from the quad....works very good on bayed boars too...avoid shoulder shots with the 125g hollows though as they lack penetration....head, heart or neck shots they work fine..

Bought a 35 a few weeks ago and shot 2deer with it and let me say it is a beast on them havent had the chhance at a hog yet but bet it drops them like it did the deer. My old 44 would drop a hog but if not good placement it ddnt have enough to put it downwhere as this 35 has penetration and will get the job done

They are pricey, but I LOVED my best friend's Winchester .44mag trapper. I had it for several months while searching for me a new rifle. I now have a .44mag Marlin. It's damn good for 100 yards. After that it tends to walk a little.

Iv typically carry a .38 with hollow points. My wife bought me the Henry .45 octagon barrel for Christmas, Ill carry a lever action from time to time, but the octagon is heavy. I also have a .22 mag octagon barrel pump Henry that's a champ as well, but the other complaint I guess I could dig up for the Henrys is that the sights are trash... You would think spending that much on a American made gun, you wouldnt have to fight so hard to shoot anything further than 30ft. But on the other hand, ill tie 90% of the pigs, and always carry a .38 or my .22 mag pistol just incase things get a little hairy. A dog or a pig, pig will go first. Iv killed good hogs with a .22 mag, lay um down quick with 1 shot. No since in takin a cannon to a knife fight.... A decent buddy of mine shot his rcd in the neck with a .30-30 rickachet in the head of a boar hog, dog made it, but a hardcore collar won't stop a .3030 fmj. Iv allways kept the powder to a minimum and shot hollow point shell in whatever caliber you can find comfortable. Pistol makes it easier to get in tight to keep the dogs safe...

I have used 22lr, 22mag 410slugm 3030 and 35rem all work good but the smaller bullets require better placement so if I am with my son I use bigger cals so he can shoot too.

I know i asked about lever guns but have any of you fella's ever messed with this gun? Its called a circuit judge, looks pretty sweet and would be a good little truck gun, i can get it in .45lc/ 410 slugs and both of those calibers got plenty of umph to knock a porker silly!

I can tell you there defiantly a difference between then and regular 30-30 rounds

I shoot the leverevoultion out of my 357 rifle and pistol and they make a difference
