Title: 44mag ammo question Post by: Hogsnatchers on January 17, 2013, 10:01:48 pm What type of ammunition have you guys found that really anchors a hog quick. I know shot placement is #1 and a 22short will do it. I'm talking about bad situation quick not ideal shot hog stopper. I got into a bad situation recently and learned real quick how fast it can go bad and I want something that's gonna cause maximum trauma right now. Any input is appreciated.

I'm not proud of it, but I took a bad shot and wound up gut shooting a pig a while back. That 240 grains took his guts out and he only ran about 50 yards before he piled up. I usually use the 240 grain but really try and stay away from the hollow points. They can fragment if they hit a limba and you can end up shooting more than what you want to.

I made some decent shots and some not so decent never ran into a situation like that before but I was not liking the performance I was getting out of solid shoulder hits with it at less than 15ft-30ft or so they'd stumble and come back up were definitely not still in the fight 100% but I wanted them out of it 100%. No chance at good head shots in the place we were stuck and it was getting hairy quick.

Title: Re: 44mag ammo question Post by: S_J_KENNELS on January 19, 2013, 11:05:28 am I have had good luck with the hornady lever everlution or how ever you spell it LOL. Also a good hardcast bullet works good. I like them in the 240 gr to 250 grns
Title: Re: 44mag ammo question Post by: firemedic on January 19, 2013, 07:27:09 pm X2 on the Hornady Leverevolution. It has a polymer tipped bullet that is extremely accurate in my Ruger model 96 lever gun. Have a few of them to my buddy who shoots a 44 mag. Pistol, he shot a hog with one of them and went to buy a few boxes if his own. I think they perform very well on hogs.
Title: Re: 44mag ammo question Post by: Boar Collector on January 20, 2013, 10:43:33 am I can vouch for the Hornady Leverevoultion ammo as well. 225 gr at 1400 fps and will wop a hog.
