Title: Anyone ever seen this?
Post by: kevin on June 21, 2009, 03:52:30 pm
I came across an old picture and was wondering....  Anybody other than TXhoghunter, ever seen hogs do this?

The hogs just balled up on top of each other in the middle of a field.  The curdogs left out on one that made a break for it.  I guess they thought they were hiding.  Made the catching part easy though.  Just reached in and grab them.

Are those pigs all piled on a dog?

No noise.  They were just "hiding" in the middle of a plowed field.

Here's a closer view

Is that round thing on the other side of the hogs a wheel from a trailer or something or just a trick of the camera?  The no noise thing is really weird too.  That would have been pretty cool to see.  How long did they stay like that?  Did you get to grab more than one hog before they moved?  sorry for all the questions, I'm just real curious.

I have never seen hogs do that with their heads inside the circle. I have seen groups of hogs rally up and face away from the circle if a dog was baying them. This usually happens with sows and shoats, but I had Dixie bay one night about 1 AM, heard the hogs rallied up in the pasture, figured it was sows and pigs. I got there and she had FIVE black barrs, all over 200 lbs, all with teeth, rallied up out in the pasture between two oak hammocks. They were mad and would run her, then rally back up.

Looks to me like they were huddled up trying to get a game plan together!

Cool pic!

That is very cool that you got a picture of that.
We had that happen to us several years ago, but didn't have a camera handy.
They piled up like that and were at least waiste high, maybe a little higher, and circle about 10ft in diameter.
They looked like a hive of bees just climbing in and out of each other, and about the same size as those in your picture.
Kinda weird looking, but still fun to see.

Thanks for the pics, nice hogs and dogs,
Maver!ck

Wow, very cool pictures.

Several species of reptiles and amphibians are known to occasionally form "mating balls"

And several species of birds are known to form predator and cold deflecting "coveys"

But I've never heard of pigs doing either of these things.

Now the two biggest boar hogs I've ever seen were beded down fairly close to each other in the mid of the night, in the middle of  a huge stuble field. so it does happen. We walked within yards of them, never even knowing they were there. When we were long past them, one of the dogs must have got wind, it circled back around, and bayed. So we released the rest of the dogs. Each of the pair of hogs had a catch dog on an ear and they were spining like bulls with the dogs hangin on for dear life, they looked like a pair of helicopters.  :o :o :o

Ive seen it on several occasions but it was always tiny, newborn pigs in a nest! They acted exactly how you describe and have pictured above after the sow was caught or had left the area. Its was too funny! They knew we were there but refused to run away! They would turn there eyes to look at us but wouldn't move muscle.

I believe the hogs that you have pictured are doing the same thing. They actually thought they were hiding from you!

This is pretty crazy for older pigs and even crazier that you were able to take pictures of it!

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I gave Stoli to Kevin Oneal when Moe got killed.  She is nursing a broke front leg right now.  She has 1 rod, 3 plates, and 13 screws in her leg.  I couldn't have given her to someone that would have taken better care of her.
