Title: 320 magnetic antennia
Post by: BRK on January 31, 2013, 03:42:15 pm
Does anybody use one and how is the reception? Will it track further, say 2 miles?

yes...it will give you a significant difference in range compared to the standard antenna.

Im not impressed with mine at all really. I generally use an antenna I had radio shack build me.

CAT where did Peachcreek get a 4' one? He one I was looking at looks more like a old style metal phone antennia with the like spring looking portion by the base.

Not sure where Peachcreek got his from, but I got mine from The Buzzzard's Roost. It's around $50.

The info I read said u can use a regular cb antenna if u get the right ends for co-ax. One thing when useing this set up is to ensure ur SWR's are correct. I would believe with this set up it would effect range as much as it does in cb transmission and reception.

You just go to any cb shop and tell them you need an antenna tuned to work with the Garmin.  I cant remember what frequency it is right off hand but 216 comes to mind. Anyhow they have a chart at the cb shop that tells them how long to cut what ever antenna you pick out to make it tuned to that frequency. I will do some digging and see if i can get a correct answer for the frequency. CircleC might remember what it is?? I got the cb shop to order some quick connects so u just turn the cable a quarter turn to change from the factory antenna to the modded antenna. I have picked up 4.1 miles with my cb shop long range ant. And a homemade collar antenna made from a single stand of 12 gauge speaker wire cut 20" long. This test was done here in the piney woods,  The collar antenna lasted a couple months until the shrink wrap got all torn up from briars. If i could find some heavy duty shrink wrap i would make up a few collar antennas.
