Who in central to east tx, san antone to dallas n houston area to texarkana area breeds goats? My folks are wantn a couple goats. Dont need or want show goats, just plain ole' goats. Whats the best goat breed for hardiness and meat texture for slaughter?

I don't work with them a lot but have had a few head. Boer seem to be the best selling meat goats. I don't have any and don't eat the meat i just stick to beef but I know lots of people that like that kind of meat. Look in to the breed I'm sure you'll find the same if your folks are wanting to get into it seriously. Hah and they do work as good lawn mowers. I'll let one or two in the yard and in about two days theyve got your lawn cut pretty good.

Idk bout breeders out that way but boer is the way to go. That's probably my favorite type of meat.

They just need lawn n brush mowers. R boer goats hardy r do they need sup feeding? We hav 20ac that needs all the under brush eaten.

Hardy enough the real hardy goats are the hardiest

They'll get your job done ya there good little goats. If you let them roam pasture just make sure predators arnt a problem or go get you a donkey for free from canton. Only thing I've had to do was clip there hooves once a year.

One thing to think about is your fence for a dumb animal goats are genius at getting through fences. I never tried putting them on that big of piece of land before they may not try so hard to get out.

They'll b in a 100x100 pen at first to get accustomed to the area, bein fed n watered n then open the gate n leave 1 tied in the pen n then let'm free range. Will they eat pine trees?

Ive never heard of them eating cedars.

I raise lamancha dairy goats but have also raised boar goats ..they are good brush goats Spanish goats I think are the hardiest host to have but for meat boar or a dairy meat goat cross and no I don't think they eat pine I have plenty and they never touched them

How much goats cost? My folks aint lookn for ag/4h goats, just somethn to use as a brush mower. Since my dads heart surgey, he can barely get around n my step mom aint in the best of health either so we need goats that r self sufficient. I need to get the land  back to a managable condition

I raise boer crosses for club goat for my sons and sell a few to local kids. We have about 30 nannies. Fencing is important they will not stay in a regular barb wire fence no matter how acclimated they are. We bbq some of the culls sometime and they are good eating. I have two heavy muscled myotonic does that if I was just looking for a couple for brush control that is the bred to get very hardy, not very big don't (can't) jump up on anything and can't get away from you when they are scared they stiffen up and fall over,lol. So easy to catch, Very good mommas and when bred to a boer buck have kids that are decent sized. Straight boers seeem to have less worm resistance and also are bigger and harder to handle, Hope that helps and as far as price on goats last time I checked they were about $1.80 a pound at the auction. I sell my cull does for $200 usually sometimes as a group for $150 for multiple purchases and not show worthy wethers from $80-150

 well my step mom said she priced some and they were askn 150-200, we both figured that was bc of show goats, but at that price no matter if they are purebred or culls, aint no way in hell i'll nor will my folks pay that for a dang brush mower. at that price, i can go through a butt load of diesel on my tractor.

15yrs ago, u couldnt giv a goat away, now they are as much a calf.

as far as fencing, aint no fencing on our property other than the pen, aint nothin but timber company pine trees to the north, and private property to the east, west and south. thats another reason we aint payn an arm n leg for a goat for them to possibly taken out by a mnt lion, yotes, bobcat and little mexico up the road.


iv eatn animals from coons, possums, goat, dog, donkey or horse and somthing in afghanistan, not sure what though, probly sheep and possibly cat, im sure them spanish goats will just as good as boer goats, or them dairy goats.  ;D

Big white dogs (I may have the name wrong) you almost gotta run a herd dog on the big operations cause goats are so easy for predators they've got no defense.

I'm sure Spanish and boers eat the same but the amount of meat is way different

when i get done processing a deer or hog, there aint enuf meat on the bones for the buzzards n yotes to say a blessing over, im sure i could get enuf meat off them gaots.  ;D

great pyrenees, kuvasz, and there is another large white dog that is used for gaurding goats and sheep...but they need to be fed each day and they need to be raised with the sheep and goats so they can follow them and protect them...but a donkey seems to be the better choice...they are territorial and hate dogs and coyotes naturally and they don't have to be trained and don't have to be fed everyday out in the open range like a dog...

Pyrenees is what I meant thanks Reuben. We used to go to this lady's goat ranch she was a show judge but she had feeders her dogs could get to but not the goats don't remember how it worked.
