Title: Will some dogs only wind??
Post by: MakeEmSqueal863 on February 04, 2013, 10:57:45 am
My best dog "bell" is a 2 1/2 year old bmc/pitbull mix. She is an awesome dog and is hog crazy but here lately has only been wanting to wind. She has never really hunted real far out but has always stayed 50-100 yards in front of me, but here lately she has been staying real close to me unless I put her on the box...she has an awesome nose and last time I went she winded one and went out 450yrds and caught him (150lb boar). Are some dogs only wind dogs?? I've never had a dog like this one shell hunt on the ground but not near as good on the box...has anyone else had a dog that would only wanna wind?

I have a little dog that likes to wind. He doesn't hunt out far either like yours. I can usually tell when im about to bay bc he throws that nose up but he dont beat my grown dogs to em bc he doesn't hunt out far. I can have him riding up front with me an he will wind and turn all the dogs out and will bay. He is young tho and may come around who knows

I'm fine with her only winding because she is super rough and catches most everything so it makes things pretty easy she winds and jumps off the truck and the hogs caught as soon as she gets there. Lol
She is a great dog. I'm just gonna have start running her with longer range dogs and maybe she'll start to trail out farther once I cant drive anymore.

Sounds like a good problem to have.  Messege me if she doesnt fit in your program.  I'd be glad to take her off your hands.

That is  a good thing if she trails a ways and you cant get there quicl she is more likly to get hurt/killed.  Have a cat that will trail and is straight catch wish he was strickly wind.

Acwells0808- If I was you I'd try her on a box, it'd probably make a big difference it's awesome to see a dog work on the box....I'll try to record a video of her soon tryin to wind one. She is only two and she defiantly has the best nose out of my dogs.

Purebreedcolt- Yeah you're right, but I run vest on all my dogs because of how rough they are, I can't say I have a dog that will just stand back in bay with out trying to catch which I like because I don't lose many hogs at all, but on the other hand my dogs are always cut up it seems like.

Good friend that I respect a lot, has really taught me a bunch about wind dogs over the last yr... first off... that I had never seen one LOL  ;D   He's got a young gyp that is just genetically a wind dog... there ain't no doubt about it.   The dog has such a cold "wind nose" it has actually been difficult to develop her because she can actually wind colder than she can trail if that makes sense... He is adamant that a dog be taught to hunt/trail before taught to wind... HOWEVER... there are individuals that come out the way they are supposed to and that is that...

Having seen this bitch work... I now want a wind dog lol... almost like hog ESP  ;D  That dog yips, at least you know you are near hogs and aren't just burnin' dogs up lookin' for sign

Everybody should have at least one dedicated wind dog.

Yeah, it's awesome to see a dog work from the box. Probably one of my favorite things to watch. It's a real talent...and I get what you're saying Noah about how her nose is colder at winding then trailing. That's happend to me some too. But generally she'll get on the track. I have some puppies I'm about to start and I'd love to get another one too wind. It makes it alot easier then wearing dogs out making them run. Noah you're from Florida I'm guessing?

I definitely agree with this. I used to have a cur dog named doc, I used him as a catch dog. But he would always stay on the truck. While the dogs were off hunting he was sitting on the dog box, and i caught just as many hogs or more with him as i did with my other dogs.

Noah, what part of Florida are you from??
Sfboarbuster, that's true in fact I ride my property that I'm hunting first with my wind dog on top. Saves dogs energy and usually will get one caught before I turn trail dogs loose!  ;D

A real wind dog is a great thing to have .  My Bell dog does a lot of it and strikes a lot of hogs in the wind , she will also put her nose down and find one.  First time I seen a real wind dog was a dog I had named Black Jack seen him wind three different times from around a 1000 yds across a coastal patch.  Just take off like a wild man across the patch me and Tom thought he was crazy the first time he done it but a hog was at the end of it not just that time but two other times from the same spot on seperate days . He was a natural best hog finding dog I ever owned  he once found 22 hogs in two days being the lone strike dog .

Noah, I'm from Winter Haven not to far. You ever hunt south any??
TexasHogDogs, I agree with that they really are something every hunter needs! That dog sounded like it was pretty jam up.

x2...I have had a few that could wind over 1000 yards...but they also had some good trailing noses on them...the old style kemmer dogs are natural wind dogs besides being good trail/strike dogs...

All of mine wind. I just ease around the woods & let em ride. Cover a lot of ground and they stay fresh. They bail out & it's game on   ;)

My strike dog only winds unless I get her on a real hot track then she will track 90percent of the time she will wind but If u get her on a hot track she'll take it she just hot nosed bud mine the same way. If you want one to take a colder track you need to get some hound in your blood line.

Sparkydog, yeah I know what you mean. But I run a real rough pack of silent cur dogs and I don't think a hound would fit I'm with them.

Florida Curdog, I know what you mean! I caught one last night about 225lbs and my dog bell winded it off the box went about 250yrds and had him caught by the time we got in there. It's just an awesome way to catch hogs.

My dogs are all strictly wind dogs. They hunt from the hood of the truck. Trips to the bay are always usually pretty short, unless you get one bayed that doesn't want to stick around. Sometimes I think it would be handy to have one to stick there nose to the ground and work it out. Just because its frustrating when they come of the hood and run out there a couple hundred yards and then loose the scent in the wind.

if the dogs can pick up the hog scent from up on the hood and when they bail out they lose it just means that more than likely they are losing the scent once they get in the thick brush...You can help them out by walking into the wind with the dogs and they will eventually pick it back up...
