EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

I am going on a hunt this weekend on horseback. I have never hunted off a horse before but am looking forward to it. I have an option between a saddle horse or a quarter horse. Both are about the same acting while hog hunting. (or atleast I was told that. ha) Which horse should I ride? Also, for the hog hunters that do hunt off horses, what kind of horses do yall have?

I just use my roping/ranch bred and trained QH's when I can hunt horseback and a good roping/ranch saddle

I started hog hunting with my old boss up in the ozarks. Alot of hills anf steep grades. He was a puerto rican guy.. Had alot of pasa finos .. Small horses but sure footed..

at least they didnt give ya the AZZ option ;D.git on em an go hunt  if ya in pigs wont matter how ya got there

If you stay on the road / trails use the saddle bred it will save your back some stress and make for an enjoyable cruse. Personally we stay chest deep in briars with ours and make two to three steps from the horse to the squealing caught hog... for that I would rather walk than be on the saddle bred horses I have ridden.

Hunting off horses would probably be the best way to do it, I have never done but would like to.

If the horses are basically the same in terms of riding, the horse should not be your concern...  The saddle is what you should be concerned about. A saddle that is too small is really rough on a persons rear end!!!
