Title: 3 legged dog?
Post by: boarhog1 on February 28, 2013, 02:23:00 pm
Just got back from the vet and my best strike dog has to have one of her rear legs amputated. For those of you that has owned or hunted with a 3 legged dog. Howd they do?

I have seen plenty of tri-pods over the years and you'll be surprised. Once he gets healed, he will be all over the place like nothing ever happened!

x3

I have seen a handfull of rear leg amputeed dogs that did fine.  Swim, run, bay.  I had one friend said the dog did better and wished he had known that years earlier so he could have had the leg removed back then!!  (maybe not all that funny)/

However, dogs that lose a front leg need to stay home on the porch.  They don't dodge and weave a bayed hog well and get caught.  They also have a terrible time swimming.

My lead strike dog got his shoulder broken and is basically three legged now and is still great, but tires out a little easier as expected. hunt with a guy who has an awsome three legged cat male, good son of a gun

This is my dog Bayou Cajun Ranger. He was always getting busted up. First he lost that rear leg, then he lost a eye, then got cut up real bad & hemoraged & died that night. He was a extra fast dog that even with the back leg amputated he could still run in the front. He had it all, Speed, nose & grit but the grit is what did him in.

Makes me feel good reading this thread. I got a puppy I had high hopes for and he got hit by a car. Vet said 5k for surgery but probably never be right but said would never run on 4 if had No surgery. I chose not to and he is doing a 100% better than I ever thought he would. Made me sick when it happened because I picked him as a pup mainly bc of his legs. Running on all four now but I would say that leg has 50% or less weight. just hope he can keep up with my lead
