Lol honestly? Labrador retriever. I dont even have one as a hog dog but the ones ive owned were awesome at anything i needed em for and picked up on training super quick. My female would retrieve any bird you could knock out of the sky, she could blood trail, she would bay a hog on command.....i dont mean just bark at one either, i mean belly to the dirt hammerin and i swear she was smarter than some people ive met.

mt curr... just fits me

x2...a 55-58 pound mt cur...because they hunt as good as a walker and most have a good winding nose, plenty of grit and lots of hunt...and the nose is about medium for tracking...all I would need is a wooden spear, salt & pepper, and a few matches...oh...and a pack of tortillas...  ;D

Curious question to follow up.  Out of these Hypothetical scenario breeds that make up your personal preferences............How many are running exactly that breed or cross now in a full pack without other influences?

myles...that's a good question...some folks run 4 or 5 dogs of one breed and 1 walker or hound cross... ??? hmmmm...that kinda says something about them other dogs...lots of good me too dogs will follow a good track dog to hell and back...one good lead dog can make a whole pack of me too dogs look awesome...

I like a pack of 5 or 6 mt curs that don't need a catch dog to catch a big boar...that is what I used to hunt and it seems to be hard going repeating what I once had...

having said all that...if a man isn't serious about breeding a type of dog that does it all...then a mixed pack will work and sometimes be the best way to go...one good track/find dog and a couple of good me too dogs that can really stop a bad runner is not a bad thing to have...but that is not my style...

Well that's mainly the reason for the question.  I checked out a few profiles....which I do understand does not give an exact account for accuracy...but a small insight. I mostly witnessed multiple crosses and mixed packs.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that in any way...but was just curious especially when I saw a few guys were very young.

If the breed or cross in your hypothetical answer is your own personal....entire package.....Boyz....I say get after it and if it holds water to your style, location,  and eye candy......you should be getting after it early so you can have a few years to iron out the kinks and perfect your own stuff.

Great point also Rube...about the versatility of the breed or cross.  Does it cover the full spectrum of your goals.  Can it produce versatility? ...or do you have to outcross each time to recreate your hypo.

Just something to scratch on.. Yalls choice of body part. ;D

I keep thinking about this question and can not answer it. I guess that means I haven't hunted enough different dogs. One thing I am sure of is the type. A good nose, gritty or rough, and enough bottom to stay with em. The dogs I run now are developing these qualities to an extent. Are there breeds that fit this better than what I have? I don't know but I'm gonna enjoy finding out.

The more I think about this the more I don't know. If it was a survival situation I'd probably go with a terrier because of the high drive and less food required. If it was just hog hunting for fun I'd say cur just cause that's what I know and like.

Ive owned and hunted with them ALL and I will have to stick with my plotts. There is enough diversity in the breed with different lines that I can get hotter nosed cur type dogs to ice cold nosed track pounding.

I gonna say a good ole cur dog. Don't need no hound it might be days before it comes home. This is saying you don't have tracking systems in this hypothetical question either.

Man if I co yld put togather a set of dogs like my cat male I would be set but while I say that think I would go with a pit/ridgeback  ok nose not a super striker but can and will find hogs speed and catch power.

Man....I've been tryin to decide since I saw this post, what...a day or two ago. I use to be a straight Catahoula man but my yella dog made me think about it. There are so many variables, A good line...no matter the breed is gonna find you pigs. That being said...I'm still gonna have to go with a well bred Catahoula.

Sorry Jasper  :-[
