Title: needing some advise on running dogs on some land Post by: Pitman01 on March 05, 2013, 09:15:48 am I'm needing some advise on how to run some dogs on a place I work by. The place is a couple hundred acres and on one side is houses on the other is a military base and running smack dab in the middle is a public road I have hunted here before and got on the pigs but couldn't get one to stop. There is a creek and three stock tanks and a lot of thick brush and briars all over this place as well. So my question is what's the best dog for this? It woild be walk hunting mostly so do I need a short range rough dog or do I use a loose baying dog? I am still fairly New to this and have learned a lot from this site already so any advise helps and is appreciated.
Title: Re: needing some advise on running dogs on some land Post by: dub on March 05, 2013, 09:33:44 am Short range loose baying bay dog with a RCD. The only way I would hunt it. If I put another dog on the ground it would be another RCD. I want the bay dog to keep baying and not help catch. I want that hog caught fast so I am not on land I should not be. With roads around I get nervous if they are well traveled because I worry about cars more than hogs hurting my dogs. With a short range bay dog you can either walk the RCD's or just walk one. I like to keep one well rested but can be turned out as soon as the chase is on. If you have the Garmins I would put collars on them all. Just how I would do it.

I really appreciate your advise

Title: Re: needing some advise on running dogs on some land Post by: Pitman01 on March 05, 2013, 10:26:17 am Right now we are trapping the area for where I work but if we don't keep catchin them then they are wanting us to try and use dogs.

I ran one strike that would bay normal but would put teeth on one that would go to turn away. Also depends on what you thinks there. The place I had I scouted out a few times before I went. Mainly saw just big looking boar or sow tracks. I went out there and got on a good 200 lb boar that just wanted to stay back and fight. 2nd time a 120 lb sow that ran so I just cut my RCD loose. If you see smaller tracks I would turn out two dogs that'll stay back so that it won't make a group run. I had a buddy that turned out rough dogs and he ran a group across a rode and scrared him half to death.

Title: Re: needing some advise on running dogs on some land Post by: Pitman01 on March 05, 2013, 10:48:03 am Well we have cameras out and there's between 20-30 hogs we keep seeing that range from 30#-300# we trapped a boar Sunday morning that was close to 200# and 2 yesterday morning that was about 60# I've tried running dogs once during deer season and we couldn't get them stopped

If you can see them then just send the catch dogs. If you have a real 300lb hog and they are runners you may need a few dogs on it to stop it or bigger catch dogs. I mean like longer legs so they can keep their feet on the ground. |
