Title: pulling hogs out
Post by: hillbilly on March 10, 2013, 08:48:40 pm
Thought about this a while back. Then read the other post on pulling dogs.
Have any of y'all thought training some bulldogs to pull your hogs out of the woods?

All it would take is a good handle on your catchdog and for it to know the basics of weight pulling...pretty good idea.

Yea I thought about this a few weeks ago while I was pulling several hogs out of the woods. Don't they pull up to like a ton or am I mistaken?

How do you get them to pull and not catch?

A shock collar or the right lead rope does wonders for manners on a bulldog...I'm sure alil extra on either would make em act right.

I am sure they could be trained. I have seen bulldogs let go of hog on command an just sit by hog. I just need to study up on the bulldog pulling.

The other problem I see is that the dog would pull flat and not be able to go over stuff as easy. I just don't have a hard time dragging pigs. Aftter tying the legs I bring the rope up and around the head and mouth and tie it. Then attach a rope to the head so you are dragging them nose first. That is how they run through stuff so they drag real easy. Dragging them sideways is harder. On the other end of the rope I tie a rescue knot and use it like a harness on my shoulders. Then I just walk out and the pig comes right behind me. If I step over something pulling from the shoulders lifts the pigs nose so it goes right over most of the time. . But with my bad knees I can do it. You use your own weight to drag the pig. One of the times the extra pounds help you.

I always walk them out. Helps to have someone to kick their head in the right direction sometimes.

Yea I walk them out as well. Seems to be faster and they dont get so stressed out. I just walk them out backwards and when they get tired I just flip them on their sides and hold them down till they start trying to kick back up

if ya'll can find bulldogs that can pull a ton i'll sell my mules and go to loggin with k-9 s ;D ;D

to drag a big hog it would take several dogs , and you can feed a horse a lot cheaper  ;)

another thing to think about ,and this is true - pound for pound  a goat can pull more than a bulldozer

I have thought about rolled up hard plastic. So it would wrap around the pig and be easy to carry. Figure a trap would be easier to carry though.

You gotta keep in mind that pulling that much weight on wheels is a whole lot different that pulling that much weight being a log or a sled on the ground. That's a lot of friction to deal with. Most every one I know can push a vehicle out of the road when it quits.

i agree it is different. they still got to be some stout mofos to pull that much. I figure if they could pull that they can pull a little ole hog out of the woods if you trained them for it.

I think that Toyota commercial is crazy. They say they "towed" the space shuttle but they only pulled it. There was no weight on the trailer hitch. I bet they could get a man to pull the space shuttle with his teeth. Put wheels on something and have it on a flat smooth ground that is easy. I have pushed my truck but I am not saying I can push 4,000 lbs or how ever much it weighs. Now when I get my engine out and put it on plywood if I can drag that to the backyard I will say I can pull 1000 lbs. It is all about the friction. Put that 7,000 lbs on a board and have the dog drag it through the grass even wet grass and then you can say he can pull 7,000 lbs. With wheels you just keep a steady pull and it will roll on flat ground.

They make a plastic liner that u can use in dump trailers that haul dirt called slick plate. It is a Teflon plastic I believe. If a man could mold some of that into a sled of sort they could pull hogs out with a fair amount of ease. By time u walk out get sled walk back get dog hooked up walk dog and pig out u coulda done been on another hog and be in the process of getting it out. Another option is do like me and only be able to kill piglets. They fit in your pocket.

We generally tie up hogs mark the spot and continue hunting. When hunt is over go back and get hogs out of woods. I realize the dog or dogs would need some kind of help. This could be done will I ever do it most likely not. Just happened to think about this oneday while I was in the middle of pulling about 6 live hogs out of a briar cat thicket.

Modified two wheel cart, works every time no matter how big the pig live or dead. 250 pound pig feels about the same as walking backwards with a push mower. Super sandy ground or up and down hills is a little tougher, but not much at all. My dogs would look at me about the same as they do when we cross a field of nothing but stickers, that "your kidding me right" look, if I tried to get them to drag one after finding it. Lol
