My "not- so- conventional" hog dog pack is expanding. We are leaving this afternoon to get a couple of new toys. Looks like my greyhound is getting some help in the form of a big male greyhound and another gyp. Foxy is probably the most fun "catch dog" I've ever hunted behind. I guess the term catch dog should be used loosely when referring to her because she's more of a stop dog. She will bay on a really big one. It's not very common to have the occasion to see her work, but it is plenty of fun to watch when the occasion presents itself. I think with two or three of these "run em down and catch 'em" dogs it should be really neat. I'm curious to see how well a big male can get one stopped. How fun  ;D

That's cool!  I've been wanting to experiment with one of those for a while, can't wait to see the results!

I'm not sure if my Foxy greyhound is the exception or the rule when it comes to hog hunting these things. She honors a bay and goes to help if needed, or she runs down one she can see ahead of her. She has a very distinct bark, but if she is baying you know you have really got something out there. What I'm hoping is that the new greyhounds will hunt or lead in like her and will provide more stopping power to help foxy shut down some bigger hogs. I'm as well hoping that in a group situation each greyhound will grab it's own hog. Of course, this would be best case scenario and we just won't know until we get the new dogs hunt worthy. Not raising these new dogs may be a folly, and I may need to locate pups to raise. However, I just couldn't pass up these that are already at an age to start! 

Finding greyhounds is HARD! The rescues won't adopt to hunting homes, breeders don't generally sell to the public, and a greyhound costs about $3,000 when you do find them for sale from a race breeder. Pet breeders are few and far between, and I fear that someone breeding for pets would likely be trying to breed against the gamey nature of the breed. It's that supreme game drive that I'm after for a hog dog. Chris and I have been chewing on the idea of another greyhound for a couple of weeks now, just didn't know how hard it was to locate one. A bunch of websites, some failed or dead end phone calls, and one lucky one later, we are heading out to pick them up!

hopefully the new additions will help stop those running hogs Chris (I think) posted about a few weeks ago.  Best of luck getting them on some hogs.

Mandy/Chris, if them do not end up suiting you I can prolly get you a stag bred like the one that made the 2 stag/bulls Mr.Gash hunts. I think your odds maybe better w/ the stags,they seem a bit tougher built overall and are a little grittier.

I'm pretty good friends with an NGA breeder in central Kansas who used to be a big coyote dogger. He won't give them away, but his biggest priority is the dog's quality of life. He's got a lot of Indian in him, and he loves his dogs like they were his own children (and I'm not exagerating) He'll want to talk to you (probably several times), get a feel for where your head is at. If he likes you and trusts you, he'll sell you a dog to hunt with.

If you want more I think I have a contact # for you on some grey hounds this guy is a breeder for track dogs but he said he culls pretty hard spays them if they are not fast enough then gives them away he said he checks them at young ages if they don't fit then he culls but don't mean they don't run!

 We made the drive out to the greyhound farm yesterday and picked up three dogs to try out. All three are 18 months  to 2 years old, and just did not make the cut. Two are littermates, whose other littermates just shipped out to the track last week, these two were not running fast enough times. There is a third dog we picked up that is out of a different litter. Two bitches and one dog total. This is just an experiment for us, we like to hunt Foxy at times, and realize that there are plenty of negatives to go along with the few positives. Thin skin, little to no stamina, weak bones, not much handle,not good swimmers,  and they don't do well in the thick stuff... The positives so far have been, plenty of drive, enough bite that she is choked off, speed that other dogs cannot achieve( not quick, just fast), if you see a hog crossing a field you can put Foxy on it watch her work her magic.    They are certainly not a replacement for our cur dogs, but for as little as they eat, we can handle having a couple to help out in the few instances that they are needed. If these particular dogs don't work out, the breeder said to let him know and he will keep us in dogs ;)

Heck, even the brand on Brandy is looking great. Sure glad you came down and helped us out. To return the favor, how about I take you on a hunt at my place...But first we need to turn out at your house so the dogs can stretch out a little.... ;)

Those headlights they have for eyes also double as flashlights in the woods if you lose yours.

On crossing.... personally, I like the way my foxy greyhound works. If its something she thinks she can handle, she catches. Too much and she bays. I know she's delicate and she is also a pet. That would make for a dangerous combination if she were stupid rough. Personally, I feel like a straight up greyhound does her job. She gets there fast, slows the hog, and keeps herself out of a bind until the other cur dogs show up. Most of the time, foxy is released after the cur dogs are already getting smoked. I am wanting to run them in pairs. The two should be able to hold one for the seconds it takes the cur dogs to catch up.

I think chris is wanting to cross some for bull hounds or dogo crosses. I can see the advantages of that too, but I doubt you should get too attached to a bull hound.

    I doubt I will ever make a cross, though I would like to see one in action.  If some of these dogs don't work for us, I will put them out there for someone else to try the crosses. I did try to talk Mandi into breeding Foxy to Clifford. 1/2 greyhound, 1/4 cat, 1/4 AB , but she did not go for it.

They look good guys!  I wish my pit was a female, I would make the cross once just to see how they worked out.  EJ and Lee had several of them and my buddies dad in Blessing, ole Sunny Feldhousen had nothing but 3/4 pit 1/4 greyhounds and a few 50/50's.  He put 6-8 on the ground and caught every hog they came up against, won Cuero several times like that as a matter of fact.  I like my looser dogs but a pack of pirahnas can be fun too. 8)

I can't wait to hear how they do.  If they are gamey, they'd be hell on hogs in some open grainfields.

Gamey....  The brindle bitch found a good sized piece of wool that I had pulled off a lamb a few weeks ago. It looks like a small furry. She kept dive bombing the "critter" and killing it. I'm not sure how she knew it was "dead", but she darn sure killed it. That's when the others decided to join in. There was a lot of killing going on!

I think at first impression that brindle has more game than any. She's also just a little bit of a stinker, but as of this morning she was approaching me wanting attention. The big male is laid back, and the black bitch is pretty submissive to people. Not like she's been mistreated, she just wants to show you her belly when you approach her. I think they will all have to warm up to me before I can really see who is going to do what.

Chris and I were amazed at how well the whole lot of them got along. We turned them out in a pen last night with foxy, and you would have thought they had all been friends since birth. No fighting, arguing, or anything.

Them greyhounds look good chris hope they will shut one down

man  those picture shure bring back some memories for me....   when i was about 7 or 8 years old we lived in Kansas and we had grey hounds  we caught coyotes with ,we had what was known as a "shag wagon"  a small 4x4 pickup with a flatbed with big dog box on top with trip latches on each side and a cable running in the cab,,,,  we would cruz the feilds and back roads looking for yote's  is one was spoted  hiss  the dogs and when they seen him pull the cable,,  the door would drop and the race was on..  those dogs could jump a new barb wire fence and never slow down...

have fun with them ...
