EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Two weeks ago walked a long ways to strike a hog right on the edge of the property. Dogs trailed him and of course...first bay was off property. It was a Big Hog and he bayed and drifted out about another 3/4 mile. Finally got to dogs but they had already lost him. I saw him as he passed by me on the way back to the land I was hunting. He was a Beast...big listed Boar. I was by myself with 1 Bulldog and no gun so I cut the dogs off. After walking 6 miles to that point and still another 1 1/2 to get back to truck...Decided then that I was done hunting by myself....but that not the story.

Went to same spot and roaded on Monday...dogs didn't get on anything. This place normally produces real well but 1 hog in 2 hunts and honestly...not a whole lot of fresh sign...time to move. Luckily the place is huge. I'm gonna drop at a different location...further west by a mile or so...or maybe even go south of the creeks and come in from that side...hadn't dropped there in a LONG while and that place use to have a Hog Highway running thru it. Point is...I believe it's gettin to that time when the pressure is getting to these hogs and I'm gonna have to start using my head and working a bit more.

My dogs are short to medium range and thats the way I like it. Hunting a walk only place with limited entry points.  Handler has to do his work to put the dogs in a position to succeed while at the same time trying to limit the walking to a minnimum. Lol

We'll see if my hunch is right today.

Another thing you got to think bout is , cutting the dogs off of the hog after you saw him heard back to your land will train that hog to run , they are smart an learn fast he will try the same thing next time you get on him

and another thing to think about, cutting the dogs off just might train the dogs to quit the hog...

I am starting to see the light shining on that Garmin...  :) it tells when to hurry or when we can take our time...and the dogs learn you are on the way and they hang in there...

Didn't go to spot I was going to...just stayed local. No good.

If the spot your hunting is huge then why hunt in the same spot??  I bet out of 15 years Ive never cut my dogs in the same place on the same place probably never.  Keep them moving around!  Work it one week from the north, the next from the southa dn so on!  You don't have to have the wind right everytime if the dogs will get out and hunt.  MOre and more people push hogs off cause they drive in the same way every single time and cut loose in the same AREA almost every single time!  Change it up, the hogs are!!!  Just what i do, use it or dont!  JMW (way)

Also, i would have let them suckers finish that listed hog!  One CD is all you need.  Everyone keeps quiting these hogs and what the discover channel says about hogs being 6, 7, 8 hundred pounds and will tops speeds of 60MPH is going to come true.  Stop them runners and get to catching hogs!!  If you get in a bind, your not gonna die or anything, dang.  I don't carry any weapon either.  Doesn't anyone remember there daddy telling them there isn't anything out there thats gonna hurt you!  Your dogs should have your back! 

At what point is a hog worth risking your dogs, and injury to you?

every time you go to the woods you risk it, part of the game...  ;)

I'm not argueing that all I'll give you 2 examples of The side of the statement i made.

Ex1. I drive a car/truck everyday, There's a risk everytime i get behind the wheel. Even following the laws and driving courteously. There's Always a Risk.

Ex2. I drive a Car/truck everyday, But I drive 100mph and do not mind stop signs, red lights, etc... Theres a risk in driving this way also.


But #2 is far more dangourous and the risk of injury greatly goes up, #1 there is still a chance of injury but the chances of injury goes down greatly. Simple common philosophy. If KevinN had of pursued tHe big boar By himself with no gun etc... He would of been putting himself in the #2 category, but by smartly catching up his dogs, he stayed in Category #1.

Everybody hunts different lol thats just what i meant by the statement i made i guess i was kinda defending KevinN's decision, huh, anyways thats all i got for now lol


 

Reuben...I hear what your saying. At the time I just think in was better to do what I did. Won't be in that position again.

Txhogsanddogs - I will be the first to say I was a dumb ass. I didn't think things thru before I turned the dogs out...and heres why....I had a strike dog that's not rough at all...a gyp that I'm just learning and 1 CD. I was more concerned with just getting out and hunting than anything else. A hog up to 150...not an issue. This big boy...not a chance. You didn't know the whole story...now you do. Try and tell me now that you would have stayed on that hog and I'll call BS.

Well I guess the best thing to do is not hunt by yourself!!!  ;D

What do you do if your dogs bay him and won't call off???  

I hunt by myself quite a bit and at night at that... Caught a few good ones alone with 1 bulldog and the other dogs still baying....I ain't the biggest or toughest guy, but you gotta be willing to back your dogs when the chit gets real...
Yeah it's Alot more risky, but that's most of the fun... If your skeerd stay home and watch American Hoggers!!!  :D ( that is not directed at anyone in particular, it's for everybody  >:D )

300 is a good hog to be by yourself, with 1 CD and 1 inexperienced dog. IMO.

And I do hunt by myself alot at that, But I do make it a habit of carryin lead just in case.  ;D
And If my dogs woulda bayed him up an me with no gun, if i felt confident ther woulda been a CD on his ear, but if it was sketchy, dogs woulda got praised an pulled off......

A hog that big by yourself...Go for it. It's them kinda stories that make your buddies feel like pansies, unless they're as crazy as you are, then it's still a helluva good story.

I have full confidence in my dogs that me by my self an one strike dog an catch dog can catch just about any hog in the woods if we all do our part it will work like it Suposed too ,
We all know some times you catch hogs in bad spots thick briars or water that greatly increase the risk , but it's all part of the game
I wanna catch every hog my dog starts big , small 
Ya I will be disappointed if I lose one of my dogs
But they are there to catch hogs not have me wondering if I would let them keep running if I would caught that big bad monster hog , I won't have to wonder, if I saw the hog pretty close my bulldog would of been getting turned loose

I've  hunted a big place for a few years also , the hogs seem to move large distances , they have there spots but as said we move around and hunt a different Area each time , we've also removed all hogs , they Are getting  a lot harder to find with this practice , as for runners , just got outrun last week. , I lost. No advice. Except better luck next time

Go ahead and call BS bud...  COme hunting with me sometime behind 1 experience strike dog (I'll leave my pup at home) and 1 CD..  I don't care the size..  If you would have said 200 to 240 i would have understood but 300, peice of cake.  Leg him and let him roll over!  :)  Good luck next time but probably won't catch tht one cause he isnt going to stop!  ;)

Agreed with txhogsanddogs I have a very very loose strike dog he will stay back 10 yards or more making circles around him. But when he breaks he's fast on putting teeth on him. I will have people tell me that this place has nothing but runners. ill take one Strike dog and one CD and catch hogs. Not saying I'm the best but I get the job done by my self.

If your gonna emulate me, you better stop calling the dogs back in and put some more years in the woods!  ;)

All I want to see is 1 strike Dog...1 CD...and if we're lucky enough...a big hog. I've only hunted this way a few times so I'd like to see it done by someone with experience.

If your not sure about an area with big hogs...I've got one...only about an hour...maybe hour and a half from you.

Deff don't word it like i'm scared...  This is the way we hunt in almost every dang tournment.  Yea, id rather come somewhere new.  lets just try and work out a time.  I'm deff out for this weekend.  It's race weekend for me...  Good luck though Kevin..  I don't have to prove a point but if you want to listen, try it several times and watch the success.  I mean a sure enough strike dog, and a very dependable CD and you can catch pigs all day long without near as many dogs getting hurt.  That one sure enough bulldog can work the hog allot better in his/her advantage without another dog in his way!  Don't always listen to the know it alls that you hunt with!! (not saying you do but there are plenty out there)  Not all advise is good advise!!  I'm deff not telling you how to hunt but I'm giving my advise to this scenario..

Oh no...didn't mean it to sound like I was calling you scared Brian. The number of dogs was never a question with me...I've never taken more than two (bay) dogs when I've hunted by myself. Heck...my trashy young pup will strike and bay a pig by himself. It's handling the big boys once you get to the bay...that's where I'd like to SEE someone with experience do it. Sounded like you had the experience...so....

Works got me tied up 6 days a week now so...Sundays are my only real option...maybe a Saturday nite. Anyway...would like to get with you. Just let me know when your free.

Hunting area is a big public place....real rough in some spots but lots of good hogs. Ill PM you...the outskirts of the place are already hunted enough...lol.

Whenever is good for me...like I said...any Sunday...say when.

    just about I been mending a bad back but i'm fixing to knock the dust off these ol dogs and hunt every thing that walks , crawls or climbs . but gonna be mainly hitting the coon and squirrel comps maybe a bay pen or two if these new pups work out .
