X3--put two cups in a water bucket and pour it on a fire ant mound. It  kills them too.

Comfortis... Hands down. Battled fleas all year last year. Been crazy bad this year. I have spent hundreds on everythin under the sun. Gave all my dogs comfortis several weeks ago and we have zero fleas. We went from having fleas covering your pants when you walked in the kennels to none anywhere.

Bayer tree and shrub quit workin for me....dawn is great to kill the fleas on the dogs but will not hold residual to keep killin the ones that jump right back on em.

Take some of this mix it with some vegetable oil in a pump sprayer to make it stick better.

It will smoke fleas and their buddies wives too.  Cost ya around 14 bucks and will do a twenty or more dogs with pissed off veitcong sand fleas with no passports carrying AK's.

comfortis....quick, easy, and last for a month at a time. it's not cheap though. probably 14.00 a pill, but its worth it to me.

I rotate between Stock-tox  (permitherin based, under $20) and Ortho granular bug-b-gone (also under $20). When I put out either one I mix up a batch of I.G.R 1 ounce bottle ($6) in a gallon sprayer and spray anywhere the fleas have been. Keeps the eggs from hatching.  Then I wash dogs with dawn for two days in a row. The comfortis works awesome but doesn't kill the eggs laid around the dog's kennel or tie-outs.

This is some pretty stout stuff. It's got a good residual too....1 pound container runs about 30-35 bucks. It will treat 25-30 gallons of water, but that's xtra strength, it's active ingredient is Cypermethrin ...40%, it can only be sprayed on the ground/dwellings, so Permethrin 10% can be sprayed on the dogs.

Also--That imidacloprid 1.47% posted above is a good active ingredient as well...

Ortho Tree and Shrub with the imidacloprid 1.47% as the active ingredient still works for my dogs...been using the same bottle for over 2 years if my memory does me right...about twice a year and all fleas stay iradicated...but having concrete floors helps a lot...

I have this and the Bayer and neither of the two work whatsoever.. Maybe I had a bad infestation but the only thing that thought about working was the Comfortis. I even bought the Permithrin SFR(high dollar crap) and it helped but they were back in full force within 2 weeks..

Comfortis, Comfortis, Comfortis!!!

... and when any eggs hatch it will kill them little daddy didn't marry mommys too!!!

I give mine two, maybe three doses a year. You can get the large dog tablets, crush one up and split between two dogs. So, $75 for twelve dogs... no bathing, spraying yards or kennels. The dogs become flea killing machines. Be sure and crush the tablet because the medicine may be on one side... we learned that the hard way.

This was my first attempt with the comfortis. I am hoping on the two or three doses a year. I did the large dog tablets and split them but didn't crush them. No ill effects but I will crush them next time just for good measure.  Good call

Chad, you won't get any ill effects... you'll just have one dog it works on and another still covered in fleas.

Mike, does comfortis work for ticks too? I don't have fleas but my dogs have been covered in ticks this year and where do you get it at?

Comfortis....I've never heard of it till this was posted....sounds nice n easy which I like. All the spraying (2 times a month) gets old. It's a lot of work to maintain spraying that much.

man fleas are funny that way , a couple of my curs have no problem with fleas at all and a couple just stay covered up with them [ inbetween sprayings  ]  I know fleas love a white colored dog , the white attracts them . they were getting ready to get bad around here till I mowed and broke out the permethrin 10% and the martins  I.G. REGUALTOR   but I think this is gonna be one of them bad years I was hoping the late freeze would knock them back .

So I just called to vet. A tablet for a 100 lb dog is $17.50, crush it up in 1/2, and give it to two 50 pound dogs, every 3 or 4 mths?

I always go proactive. I treat the soil with the flea and tick killer. The granular kind that you water in. Kills grubs and other stuff too. The I treat with the tree and shrub stuff. I heard today that you can give them garlic pills , you know the cheep pills from walmart in the vitamin sections. I'm not sure if it'll work or not, but it may be worth a try.   The thing is when you get it under control, dont stop.... keep a good routine going. Just like a worming routine.

good luck
