where i hunt very few people use a catch dog because they say it makes their hounds to gritty i have only been using a catch dog a little over a year now but have hunted hounds my whole life     I have found if a hound is catchy or gritty they are going to be bull dog or not  lets hear opinons

 This is a very interesting question.

 We have always heard that putting a loose baying dog with a rough dog will make the loose baying dog rough too. We had a very loose baying dog who ran with a rough dog and he did eventually get a little rough. And when I say eventually, I mean over the course of several years.

 We have some of his offspring who are loose baying when alone or when with other loose baying dogs and are rough when paired with rough dogs.

 But Ive never considered the catchdog having an effect on the bay dogs. I would also like to hear some opinions on this subject.

  so who is this fella that thinks a hound needs the influence of a bull dog to become gritty ?  lol allmost every hound I have been around thru the years were gritty as all get out and were opportunistic catchers . if they saw the opportunity they would catch whatever game was involved . in other words , if it didn't get up a tree it got strung out and stretched out .

My Ol redtick is pretty rough by himself and if there is another rough dog with him he's gunna try and catch, don't really matter how big the hog is. Once he sees the catch dog come running in, he turns in to straight catch an locks down!!

Both of my Blueticks are all ear. If it aint bad enough to make em step back an bay they are caught. Plenty of grit, I wouldnt think you would have to influence a hound with a bulldog to catch. Mine dont at least.

I'm with Mr. Whitten, most hounds have a ton of prey drive.

I guess...I don't really understand.

I mean I understand the concept of getting catchy/grirty over time because of outside influence.

What I wonder about is....if they don't use bulldogs....don't they want their hounds catchy? Either that or they are just shooting over their dogs when they hunt.

the area i grew up and hunted in TN everybody has always bayed and shot them or shot them crossing the road even myself it was the way i was raised from a kid but a couple of us got started using a catch dog so we could turn them loose but the rest of the hunters excuse is a catch dog will make your hounds catch as well we catch quiet a few hogs and have the best luck with two or 3 hounds and a catch dog not the country we hunt is big steep terrain with very few roads and some times have to walk a mile into a bay

What I like about hounds is this.... You can take the same pack of hounds and run a hog, tree a bear, and tree a mountain lion. Hounds were the first hunting bay dogs. Lil wasper I know youve treed bear and bayed hogs with the same open mouthed hounds. Hounds by nature will put their mouth on game and when the game says thats enough they will bay or tree. If a hound wont stay in a hogs face once it gets its clock cleaned...that aint a good hound. Jmo

I just started using a bull dog two years ago, before that we roped em r if the hog was real big just bay n shoot. so before when you got to the bay the dogs kind of backed up to see if you was going to shoot r not. now they start baying tighter getting ready for the bull dog to get their n catch cause thier going to catch with em

Yes I believe a bulldog catching will start others dogs to help catching.

now  my dogs will help a bull dog when he gets caught no dout but i got a plott that would catch at 10 months old and will still smoke one at 3 years old i try to watch what i get him on and mainly bear hunt him but my other hounds bay just as good as they ever have except when the bulldog hits they usually catch on the rear
