Title: Hog Bait for trap?
Post by: Kelley350x on May 31, 2013, 10:52:16 pm
I have an ad on a local website looking for a place to run dogs. A older man called me and told me he needed help getting rid of some hogs that are busting up his yard but he didnt have enough land to run dogs on, wanted to know if I had any ideas or traps. I went out and looked at everything and the hogs had came in about two weeks in a row about every other night and tore everythign up.

I went out yesterday and put a trap out that consisted of a "hog slammer" style door and 6 hog panels with T post every 4'. I baited it with fresh corn and some old molasses deer Attractant I had in the shed. I put a trail outside the trap going to the entry point of where they are coming onto his land at.

Is there anything else you guys would recommend that may help persuade the hogs to come on in?

Just do a search. This has been covered many times. If they are already coming there just put some corn in the trap. Looks to me like you spent too much money already. That door is $300!!! Just make a door that they can get under going in but not out. Seems to me you are way over thinking this. But you can use the fancy door if it makes you happy and the fancy bait too. I will stick with the cheap stuff that I know works.

I am sticking to the cheap stuff too... notice I said hog slammer style door.... I built mine from scrap angle I had left over from another project. I used hinges that came off our front door when we changed it out and two $4 springs. I already had the panels and post.. the molasses was left over and the corn was $10.. add in $5 for welding rods and $3 for gas in the welder..

It took me about 2 hours to build the slammer door, and about an hour to set this thing up.. What makes me happy is knowing that i didnt spend $250 or more on a trap.

corn is good all the mast is gone that they normally feed on  . but you can sour you some corn and give you more of an attractant smell to bring them in .

I've got some corn that has been souring for about three months, pretty rank stuff. I started to spread it around but it is pretty close to his house.. lol I think he would rather have the hogs..

i sour about 100 lbs of corn at a time in a syrup tub fill tilll water is over corn u may have to add water daily till corn is soaked do not cover top you will notice a sweet smell after about 4 to 7 days thats when i use it you can add about a half gal of diesel to it that will slow down other animals and birds from taking it i also us sour wheat both work for me  . GOOD LUCK

I just got a call and the man told me that the hogs are out there, in the trap and all around it as well now we are just waiting for them to step on the "tripwire", he said they have been eating the corn outside the trap and finally went in it. Just a matter of time. Even if they dont trip it tonight at least we know they are trusting it and will be back. There are currently 8-9 inside the trap..

BACON!!
