Title: 2008 Ford 6.4
Post by: hog bit on June 07, 2013, 12:56:31 pm
I need to know the good, the bad, and the ugly about this engine.

I know the truck has been dealer serviced regularly.  Are they good bone stock? Are they notorious for any certain problems?

Should I expet to get 18MPG on the highway?  Are there any certain questions I should ask about the vehicle? How many miles should I expect to get out of this engine?

Thanks

I cant offer any insite on THAT eng, but i know the 6.0 was POS when they first come out. How long has that 6.4 been out in comparison to that paticular yr model tck? A couple yrs aftr production, the manufacture  usualy has the bugs worked out n the recalls in place.

We had a couple of 2008 F550 6.4 company trucks. Sent them down the road in less than a year.  The 6.4 trucks spent more time in the shop than they did on the road.

I hear good things about the Ford 6.7

For comparisons sake...  We had a 2003 F550 6.0, 2004 F550 6.0, and 2-2008 F550 6.4

The original 2003 F550 6.0 is still running strong.    I think with the 6.0, if you got a good one, you had something.   That said, If I go out and buy me a 6.0 or a 6.4, it will have to be cheap enough that I can drop a 12v in it.

A cummins is like a sore woody, u just cant beat it. Cant go wrong with a 12v or early 24v cummins.

The 6.4 came out in late 07 early 08. They lasted 3 yrs. It has a twin turbo setup on it it also has a dual egr cooler setup. The fuel system is electronicly actuated high pressure fuel and the high pressure pumps and injectors were constantly failing saw many with less than 30k with failed injectors and pumps. The main drawback is when something fails you have to pull the cab to pull the turbos. It is a mechanics nightmare/moneymaker. Very unreliable.

6.7 is solid had three 6.4's will get nowhere near the mileage your talking about stock, standard or auto. Bad about blowing head gaskets

I had one and it stayed in shop constantly, I'd stay away from it. Mine put deisel in oil, blown head gasket and problems with the exaust filter. Bad fuel milege also.
