Have a 2000 f-550 with 70,000 original miles. Drove it last week and was great, as always. Jumped in it yesterday, waited for glow plugs and cranked and ran like a top for 10-15 seconds. I reached over and turned on the A/C. Coincidence or caused by the A/C, the thing started spitting and sputtering. I killed it, turned off the A/C. Have cranked it a couple times and I acts like its only hitting on 4 cylinders. I've owned it for a year and its the cleanest, most well maintained crew cab dually I've ever seen. Any thoughts? It's throwing a check engine code every now and then so I guess I need to read the codes. I know about the crank shaft sensor but I've never had one run rough when they went out, just wouldn't start. Any thoughts?

Have u drained the water seperator at fuel bowl? Too much water will eventually wreck the injectors. Could also be lift pump is shot and not getting fuel up to top. Could also be dozens of other things. Your right about the cam position sensor, it usually just won't crank. Definitely get the code checked. Are you sure you didn't run it low of fuel and get air in fuel line? That will cause it to run rough. Just bleed the line if that's the case.

Could be many things. The injector wires go through the valve cover gaskets. I have seen them dry rot with age and drop four cylinders.

Filled up last week and still over 1/2 full. I open separator drain every 3-4 fill ups and let it run for a few seconds while the motor is running. I thought about injectors but its just odd the way it happened.

Boone is right them wires are also a common problem with age. I would say its either that or lift pump.

Be looking at the valve cover gaskets or harnesses under the valve covers. Does it run any differently with the ac off? I've seen shorted ac switches take power from other circuits highly doubt it on a diesel only seen it on stangs.

Easy way to see if the harnesses under the valve cover have shorted usually not always they will burn the prongs off the connection at the gasket you can unplug them and take a look for burnt connections. Be very careful while disconnecting them your probably still gonna break the clips though just a warning

Since them injectors are elec over hydraulic, do a cylinder cut out test IF u can pull the wire terminals at the valve cover for each injector. If the idel gets rougher, plug it back in n ck the nxt 1. IF u find any injector terminal that does not affect the idle, mark that/those terminals n pull ur cover n ck the terminals on the injector its self n c if they r good, loose or what ever. Rarely should more than 1 inj fail at the same time but it could happen. It could also hav a blocked oil galley leading into the injector, not allowing it to squirt

Check your oil.  Its amazing how it'll affect that engine.  You'll have to pull the valve covers to try what Charles said.  The valve cover harness is real common

ford has a rep for burning oil, low it will f...up rings....other then that prob something minor...filter,electricts,ect...
