EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Alright so I got this dog about a week ago he was completely normal so I have taken him hunting a 3 times he stuck one big boar for us then the very next night we caught a big tooth boar! With this dog didn't get cut on this side or snake bit! If you Will look at the baseball size knot on the right side in the picture and it's not soft or feel like puss or nothing it's hard as a Dang rock! Right on the rib cage I have not hunted him since last Wednesday and it just randomly popped up today what do yal this this is! I don't ask for much help or advice often cause I can usually tend to things or figure things out on my own but I am completely dumb founded at what this is!

Hematom, seroma, abscess are my first thoughts...  Blood filled pocket, serum filled pocket, pus filled pocket, respectively.  All can be firm to the touch

What should I do! Will it go away if its any of the things you listed above

My dog cain did the same thing . He got hit vet said broke rib.

My first thought was broke rib

Well he eating slow and getting around slower then normal! So I think it's bothering him pretty good

I would give start antihistamine just in case and some antibiotics. If it gets any bigger I would go to the vet. I will tell you to go to the vet now. You can give your vet a call and see if you can get an x-ray. Do what I do at your own risk ;)

I had a young dog do the same thing a month or so . He struck a sounder and caught two smaller sows and showed no signs of being injured.
A few days later he had a knot on his side the size of a softball. wasn't eating much and wasn't moving around as usual. I drained it and gave him antibiotics and had to leave for a week for work while my son looked after him. I returned home to discover another knot lower on his side and his condition getting worse. again I drained the knot and gave him antibiotics twice daily for another week. he seemed to be doing better and was moving around better and was starting to eat more. After the second week I was making my rounds through the yard checking my dogs and found him dead. I raised him on my yard out of my dogs and he was a natural hog dog. He found a hog his first time out and almost everytime after. He figured it all out on his own, I never had to show him anything or put him behind another dog  to show him. He was the best dog I have ever owned or even hunted behind . I am sure I will never be able to replace him and I gotta say he would probably still be the heart of my pack if I would have just taken him to the vet and got a positive diagnoses of what was wrong with him.

Anyways sorry to ramble on ,but I would have the vet check it out.

Hate to hear that you lost him MOhogger, like they say........hindsight is 20/20.......... after reading these stories I think it would be in the best interest of the dog to go ahead and tote him to the vet personally.

Could be an abcess .....

Have you tried to lance it?

Do you have any antibiotics on hand?

I would probably say a vet visit would be a good idea given the size of that area....

Yeah ,it was a mistake I wont let happen again.

You better get this dog to a vet.....let me put it this way......if you woke up with this on your side, wouldn't you go to a doctor? Of course you would.....simple as that!

Easy now  he will go to the vet that was already a given just asking opinions! Thanks for all the ideas n comments we will see what the ole vet says this evening!

Sorry tejas,......"Damn Cuban cigar got me all riled up." Good for you for taking it to the vet. Hope it turns out to be nothing....I had forgotten that we killed a big hog a couple of years ago in TN, my buddy's dogs. both Plotts, got several stab wounds from this boar hog. He forgot to doctor them when we got back home and had knots like your dog come up on both his dogs. Good luck man.

Oh no your good i understand where your coming from! My dogs get treated by the vet when i can't do it on my own i try to stay out of there it's breaks the bank everytime lol! But i can promise ya I am not one of the young punk kids that don't take care of his dogs! I am young but my dogs are my number 1 priority I was pretty much just trying to learn what this knot was because like I said he had not been cut!

Play it safe and let Vet do some X-rays

Good for you man,.....I'm glad to know that you see it that way. I understand totally about breaking the bank.....I've spent way more than I wanted this past year on vet bills. I appreciate your honesty. 8)

Update on freckles all he had was an abcess it's got a tube in it and draining good now!

I would have shaved the area and look for copperhead bite.  he tell you what caused the abcess?  glad it got figured out.  casey told me about that dog when you got him.  hope it all turns out well.

James he didn't tell me what really caused the abcess i am thinking there was either a thorn or he got hit by one of those bigger boars we caught couple weeks back but he is healing up great! I think I am gonna hunt him tonight I am pulling his drain tube out today so he should be fine

Kelton i got a couple milo fields on tha leon we gonna hit this weekend tour more than welcome to come along.

Dang that sounds like some good fun I really wish I could but I gotta work nights all dang weekend James! We will get together eventually sooner or later and catch some piggies
