I enjoy seeing old pictures, especially the ones of hunting. I saw JIMCO post of the old pictures so it made me go find mine.

This picture says on the back 1942, it is my great grandfather, Big Popa Rawlinson, and his sons, my great uncles, Bumper and Bobby. Big Popa, originally from Center, moved to Hardin County around Batson and then Liberty County at this point around Moss Hill and Hardin, Texas.

He was well known for making "primitive tracking systems,"or blowing horns! My Uncle Bobby still has his last one, it is a goat horn with a deer fore leg skin dried over it, because it had been run over by a car.

These Great Uncles tell stories about how he was with the guys that hunted and killed the last bears in the Big Thicket. I can show you in the Trinity River bottom just north of Liberty, what has been called the Bear Tree for four generations, because that is where they treed and killed the last sow and 2 cubs in Liberty County.

After that they fox and coon hunted at night with these same dogs, since there were no more bears and they would use these same dogs to work their woods hogs or cattle with in the day time! They said he would take his blowing horn outside after dark when he wanted to go hunting and blow it to see if any of the neighbors would answer back, and if they did they would meet up and go hunting that night.

So Trenton your Possum dogs are just throw backs to the old stock dogs!

Well I meant his sound, but yeah his mouth on track too...

It Don't bother me, heck I actually like it..... Once he gets more experience lining out a track, them legs of his should make up for his track yakkin ..  ;D

Nice old pic. A family treasure for sure. Seems all the hunting dogs from that era were very versatile.

He was raised in El Campo  .. He said they would always have at least 8 coon dogs and run 4 one night and 4 the next night. They'de sell the fur to I think he said Montgomery wards but I'm not sure

Chris, in that last pic are them two blue dogs gascon hounds ?

I love to hear and see history passed down.  That's neat about the Bear Tree.  You go to pulling out old pictures and seeing what your family done and how they lived and it's something you hope and pray your children can come to love as well.  Them oppossum dogs look pretty good getting it done to  ;)

Mr.Bryant those two on the left are my uncle's gsp dogs ... He doesn't hunt them but keeps them around cause my grandfather liked them so much  .. When they use to go visit him at the old people house he'd ask " where's the rest of the family ?" talkin bout those dogs .. They'd tell him we can't bring those dogs in here and he'd just get quiet and be in a bad mode . Haha

I went a long time not even knowing my grandfather had hunting dogs till I started digging around through some old photo boxes. He stopped cause some nut killed all his dogs by feeding them meat with glass in it... I was just glad that I got to ask him about  hunting and hear some old coon huntin stories before he passed.

old Whity from 52 or 56. cant remember. One of the vary few leopard pics I've seen from the 50's. This is a canvas made up from the original 2 x 2 inch picture.

Here is a picture of Lone Star Preacher.  He was out of Rogers Buck and LuLa Bell.   My sister found this old picture with his name.   This was one of the fastest tree'n, most accurate dog that I could remember.   Dad's old hunting buddies hated to go with these old curs.   For the most part they all ran walkers.   Dad use to kid'm because Preacher would tree behind the walkers and have the meat.   Travis, a older brother of mine,  said this old dog gave him some great memories.   Dad use to send him and another brother up the trees with a stick to knock out the coons.   Yep just like Jerry Clower's called it LOL....  Dad sure though a lot of his old leopards.

Here is Pickett Rogers or I think it's Pickett.   He was out of Blue Streak and Katie Lou.  Dad had took Katie up to L.T. woods and bred her to Blue Streak.

This picture was took in or around 78.   If you look over my should you can see another lep in the background.   May have been Richards Emma.   Not sure.   I'm waiting on my older brother to help go through these picks so we have the right name on the right dog.   It was only 35 plus years ago...

Emma  came  Willie E Richardson in Silsbee Tx.   She was out of Poor boys Little Hammer and Hannah Hubbard.  Hammer was out of Englands Little lep and Englands Sheba while Hannah was out of  Skiles Hammer and Spring Valley Delilah.    Dad had got'n  her in the mid 70's .   Emma D.O.B. 5-9-73


I was sure glad to see these old pics.  I hope she finds even more. They bring back so many old memories.  Those were some good old days.
