What are your thoughts on a dog that hunts good, catch a lot of hogs with him... but the semi open drives me nuts. Some of the runners are not caught im thinking that this dog could be the reason for that... He would be a top notch dog if he was silent. Debating if I should sell him.

I was in the same boat as you as of what I though about open and semi open dogs... Now that I've hunted behind a few it's doesn't matter...JMO If the swine has runnin on their mind their gonna do it with 10 silent dogs after em or 1 open dog.

Let me rephrase it, catch a lot of hogs behind him... not a problem until the hog breaks... sometimes we will stop and bay them up and sometime we just open and allow them to run a little faster.. If the hog bays up long enough to turn the catch dogs loose its not a problem. I have never ran a semi open dog, so I was asking for advice on someone that has.... We all open when we have blue sirens behind us.

I had a redbone, she was a great dog. Same as you described. She was semi open as well. I didn't care much for it so I sold her. Had a friend that wanted her because he loves open dogs. If it drives you nuts sell it

Like they said above him being open ain't gonna affect catching a hog. If the dog is moving the track faster than the hog is making them the dog will catch him and bay. If a hog wants to run, he's gonna run. It all comes down to personal preferance. I like the assurance that when I hear a bark it means the dog is looking at a pig. Some dogs you can tell the difference when they are trail barking or when they are bayed. I could with my redbone

I don't think it really matters. personally I like listening to it. but if your dog is a hound, in my opinion there faster on a track then a cur. just from what iv seen. if you cant stand it and wana sell her pm me cuz id look at her

Open or silent doesnt matter much but track speed does!

I have hunted with completely silent dogs ever since the first day and always thought a dog that barked a little on track would make them run but now I think it's so many people hunting that most hogs know what a dog is and are gonna run when they get after them. I bought a dog awhile back that barks a little bit on track and they don't run no further if he's after them or these other dogs are after them that don't bark any on track. And I still don't like open dogs but I like dogs with more bottom than most people have time so that's the only reason I keep him. You just have to weigh his good qualitys and bad qualitys and make your decision

They are quick with a track mine was full speed ahead always. Never had a dog that gamey before

I have the same issue infront of me now.  I talked to a buddy of mineabout it thats been dogging a lot longer then me . His opinion was keep what you got till you get something better.  I think thats my new route.

If it drive you nuts, than that is your answer.  I've let some great dogs go becuase there was something that drove me nuts about them.  Had a super cold nose plott that would find hogs that 99% of other dogs couldnt.  It was nothing for this dog to make a 15 mile race.  When it came to hog hunting, she was money in the bank.  Geat temper, beautiful registered plott....but she barked too much at home and I could not stand it.  I sold her becuase she barked too much.  Maybe it is crazy, but it drove me nuts.  Sometime you gotta do what you gotta do.

   he would be a top notch dog if he was silent  ?   lol   if you don't like listening to him , fine  but it sounds like he is a top notch dog silent or open  . after a bay breaks you shouldn't care  , or I don't anyway  if every dog in the pack opens the hog all ready knows the dogs are upon him . but if your falling into that    open dogs make the hog run , you're wrong .  being bayed up and the dogs letting it bust the bay is why they run . the dog is just letting you know which way they are running   lol  .  if you just can't stand it you answered your own question .

We have a bmc that bawls. I love it. We have some younger dogs that it helps out plus we can tell what's goin on by the sound of his bark: if hes running, stopped, etc... Almost like you can see the hunt w out seeing it!   I love to hear and watch them work!

I like a dog that hunts open or not. Like others I love the hear that song and love it even better when they begin singing the finally, got a redbone gyp that will sing them a song. I also have a male that will bawl on track. Ain't no doubt what or where they are. Not to mention it just jacks me up when they are stepping and telling the hog u mine big boy.

I personally dont want a dog that opens up while working on a track. But once the dog has seen the hog or the hog has seen the dog, the dog can sing whatever song he wants to sing. At that point the jig is up already so it dont really matter how mouthy the dog is

I have a hell of a dog just like you are talking about !  I love him to the moon and back some days some days I want to shoot him .  But he is a burn up the woods huntin fool !

From my experience down hear nowadays if a hog hears a dog cry, wine, chop, he's gone running if u have dogs with a ton of bottom and a bunch of big places to run them then chase them as far as u please but it just don't work for us. I've owned a few opened dogs and maybe they just wernt as good as others or maybe it just don't work for us I love the sound but just not when I'm hog doggin

x2 on seeing the hunt play out...most my dogs were semi open and a few open...I did not care for the open trailing dogs when working a track...but the ones I liked best were those that opened 2 or 3 times when a hot track was struck and then shut up...this pulled the pack together and the next time you heard them they were bayed or caught hog...but sometimes the hog was jumped and some dogs were singing on the red hot track...and that was ok with me...

the dogs I have now run silent and I really miss those semi open dogs...

Yes Brad.  The dog I am talking about is the mother to your pup.  She is a Cajun x Heat/Orville Roberts bred plott.  Sounds like your pup has a lot of the same traits as her mom.

Just my opinion but an open dog just gives a hog a little head start. Will both types catch hogs?   absolutely !

When the hog breaks, do y'all really think it matters if a dog is open or silent? With dogs burning it's a$$ up?

No if  the dog is fast enough to catch it and shut it down .. If the dog is slow yes . My OP

If he's open and finds a lot of hogs I'll buy him.

If he's running it defenetly don't matter but if ur down wind of him and he's eating r sleeping r whatever and he has no idea ur there and all of a sudden he heard chop chop chop I can bet if he's from around here he's pumping up them nikes and runnin but I can agree with others to if the dogs workin the track faster then the hog is runnin then he'll shut em down all in all what ever works for your style of hunting is all u need and if it ain't broke don't fix it
