Title: Dogs recognizing another dogs bark
Post by: brad s on July 28, 2013, 10:02:19 pm
I hunted fri and caught a sow then 2 of my dogs rolled out an bayed on someone else's hunting lease and caught the hog they had bayed. Now after catchin 2 hogs we are walkin back to truck an hear another dog baying (not mine) my dogs went to them and bayed with them. Now I'm wondering what happen n all of sudden people start Ridin up on rangers and they were huntin Also. They were nice just said since my dogs were with there's let's catch some hogs. And we caught 2 more. Now here is what was weird. One of there dogs was bayed alone and my catch dog acted like he didnt want to go to him he was only 100yds and could clearly hear him. Well 5 min later 2 of my dogs bayed a different hog and they were farther away and he made a b line to them and caught hog. Just thought it was weird maybe he didnt recognize the bark idk.

I can see this. In the wild yotes and wolfs can recognize the call and bark of pack members why not hog dogs. I have seen bay dogs that would honor a bay of a pack member but not that of a different pack even when hunting together.

My curs r the same way. Will go to 1 of my dogs bay but wont to another dog outside of my yard unless we r nearly on top of them. They will though perk their ears up n listen n show u the direction if the barks r barely audiable, but will wait till a couple hundred yrds or less till they go in

Yessir....saw it not to long ago. Hunting the milo with Blake.......lots of little short bays and breaks before they finally settle one down. My gyp coming off a litter...hadn't hunted in a while. She was kinda hesitant in going to Tater or Buck. Again...short bays but she just wasn't trying real hard. But when my Jasper (kennel mate) opened up, in the same scenario...bay and break.....she was high tailing it trying to get to him.

ahh heck yeah they do   , it is no different than them ignoring every other vehical sound within earshot , but go nuts at the sound of your truck coming down  the road way before they can see it . my dogs will perk their ears up at the strange dogs bark and a couple I had would head that way till corrected . it was a problem when hunting around the farm . I didn't want my dogs going to honor my neighbors yard dogs  lol  if it's a problem and you want to , it can be corrected .  trust me , the dogs know who they are hunting with and know a strange dogs bark from a hunting mates .

My dogs very rarely go to unknown dogs barking... I guess since we hunt some properties with houses around and they got used to others barking? I've had that prob with new dogs too... If I took the dogs hunting right away my dogs wouldn't really go to the bay.. But i have Weird dogs lol
