Title: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: Reuben on August 04, 2013, 03:52:51 pm About twenty miles east of San Antonio...no one called in that we have grand children out in the heat...but a good Samaritan called 911 about our 2 dogs in a cage...said they might be over heating...they were hot but in the shade with cool water to drink and cool down with...still going to make it to Garner State Park...but am wondering how much on the tranny fix...was blowing and going pulling my RV in overdrive saving on fuel but is going to cost me lots...blew a hose or the front seal on my transmission...right now waiting on brotherinlaw to drop off his RV and come back to pick us up as well as our RV...making the best of our vacation...going to be alright...

Title: Re: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: Reuben on August 04, 2013, 04:39:34 pm Thanks...I appreciate the prayers and thoughts...I am going to gamble and see about only replacing the seals and the fluid and then adding a quart of lucas...it was shifting fine when I pulled over...but the fluid was smoking hot...will get advice from mechanic back home first before making that call...
Title: Re: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: grittydog on August 04, 2013, 05:05:00 pm I hope you get to enjoy the rest of your vacation. This is the first year we didn't go to Garner for a week. We always get a cabin outside of the park, but spend a lot of time there. When I retire I would love to move to Gods Country.

Title: Re: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: Reuben on August 05, 2013, 09:05:30 am Thanks Justin...there is hope...I was telling my brother that all was fine oil pressure and temperature was fine and the tranny was smoking hot like it was starving for coolant...like engineering screwed up...my brother calls this morning and tells me he thinks the fluid got hot and boiled over...I googled it and it went straight to my year model truck and it said the same thing...I told mechanic to drain torque converter and replace filter and fluid and add a quart of Lucas...mechanic agrees...hope that is the problem...the fix according to what I read is to add a transmission cooler...

Title: Re: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: Shotgun wg on August 05, 2013, 09:14:44 am U mean a 3500 did not come factory with trans cooler. All trucks that are going to be pulling a load need a trans cooler. My half ton trucks have them.

Good news...tranny is fine...the filter melted cause the tranny got real hot trying to keep up with the young goat... :D I will be out $316.00 and my son and his fiance will bring it to the camp site on their way here...chit happens but moving forward...just thankful it all worked out... Title: Re: BROKE DOWN ON I10 Post by: DoubleJHogDogger on August 06, 2013, 10:22:56 pm Just traded my eleven goat for a thirteen Ford and I will tell you first hand that goat won't pull or get anywhere near the mileage of this new Ford. Never ever thought I would own one but so far I love it. I am a Dodge man but this last one really put a bad taste in my mouth. Hope your repair works for you, I think transmissions these days have gold in them somewhere.

I took it in to get the tranny seal changed and found it had a cracked weld around the torque converter hub. Had to put a new one in. Good luck with it.

Thanks...right now the fix was 316 dollars...but will find out when I get back on I10 on the way back home...I googled transmission boil over and got lots of info on the 99 powerstroke...not enough tranny cooling for heavy loads...as long as I stay below 65 mph my 99 is ok with the heavy loads... |
