Anyone ever built one?

Pigs turn over their water almost every day. Kind of a pain.

Read about old timers building wooden troughs. No sealant necessary. Will leak first few days but wood will swell and it will seal up (they say). Think in gonna build one this evening and give it a try.

Never built one but we use boards in drain pipes in rice fields. Put the individual boards in the pipe and they go in easy dry. Once they swell they are tight and will not leak. Takes a good deal of effort to get them out also.

dad had some that were built out of redwood. This was way back in the 70's. You can't hardly afford to buy redwood now, but it will swell and hold the water.

Here is what I have used for the past couple years. 55 gallon drum and an $5 nipple from TSC. Water never gets dirty and they can't knock it over..

How'd you mount the nipple? A bulkhead fitting?

  yep kevin  that's it  . I made one for my bro inlaw when he raised a couple show pigs  . works great I need yo make one for myself  lol  .

What kinda nipple, like a rabbit watering nipple? Only on a larger scale?

Well...I know they sell the nipples at tractor supply. I'm gonna try this wooden trough. It's not so big they can get in it. It's gonna be 10'X12"X12". Ill see if it works...if not ill go with the nipple.

Whatcha gonna build the trough out of? Pine wont seal to good n hardwood is outragiously priced.
I purchased 8 250gal water totes, well they had cutting fluid in them, but i think im gonna try the nipple thing n put a float in it to keep it full at all times. Screw a wallering hole, my pigs got pleanty of dense covering hopefully till it cools off n i can pour them a concrete wallerin pool. The wife gets mad bc them pigs get a pool bfore she does. Lol.

Not sure what a rabbit nipple looks like.. These say pig watering nipple on the package. Got them at TSC.


Don't remember exactly what I used but I know its all PVC screw fittings. I have had a couple 300# plus domestics and countless wild pigs on them and I have never had a leak. I have 3 different barrels with the same thing on them.

Well....I'm using pine Charles. We'll see what happens. Hopefully ill finish it tomorrow. Screw gun died and I'm charging it tonite.

I may get some pine tar or something and just brush over the seams on the outside to try and slow the flow down until the wood swells.

We'll see what happens  ;D

Good thing is...if it does work... That's 9 cubic feet...67 gallons of water. That'll last a while. Lol

I think if u used a tar to seal the cracked up, it will hold fine. U can always line it with fiberglass if u had to. I used a 50gal rubbermaid trough from tsc, but usin them for the dogs now. I may ck out them 200gal round plastic waterin trough from tsc n build an incline ramp in n out of it for the piglets, mite even build them a lil piglet wading pool so they swim or get in n drink w/o havin to stand on the ramp. Wife is gonna get mad again if i do all this for a buncha pigs n not get her a pool. I guess she could get off in the trough with the pigs, heck i would if they poo n p in the water

Correction, i would get in there with them if they DID NOT!!!! poo n p in the water. Im not into the schiezer thing

That barrel deal would be good for dogs too. Can the same nipple be used for dogs?

No...the one Chad has is for pigs...they BBC have one for dogs and it is called a liksit...uses 3/4" connections...

I have a buddy that uses the hog nipples in his dog pens, but they are plumbed in...might work different with the gravity fed???

Never tried them for dogs.. They would have to bite it to get water out.. Who knows.. I guess if they got thirsty enough they would figure it out..

Well...I got some gaps I KNOW ain't gonna close by just wood swell. I ain't a carpenter I guess.

Gonna get some waterproof polymer wood filler tomorrow. That should take care of it.

My Dad made a living raising hogs when I was a boy.  We built water troughs out of rough cut hardwood lumber that we got from local saw mills.  put the PVC through a hole on the top at the end of the trough.  Hooked a float to the PVC, but made sure the water level was under the hole where the pipe came through.  We built a box around the float, leaving a 2" gap at the bottom of the trough to let water in to the big part of the trough.  When we first put water to it, we would sprinkle some sand along the seams to stop the leaking.  In two or three days, the wood would swell and the leaking was over.  You can also leave the float outside of the animals pen.

I can see it in my mind, but have a hard time writing the description down. LOL

Well I went simple but its functional...just a couple small drips but holds water well...only lost about 1/2" in 24 hours.

hey Kevin...you probably will need to nail a couple more boards across the top otherwise the pigs will lay in the trough and push some of the water out as well as muddy up the trough...as a kid we built the troughs smaller and the larger ones had boards across it to keep the hogs out...

Had to clean it out...3" of hog crap and mud, lol.
Got more boards across...should be good now.

It definitely holds water....not bad.
