Title: Haters dont reply...
Post by: skmarcus on September 29, 2013, 05:02:27 pm
Had an accidental breeding with #1 hunt dog and catchdog.  Timing is bad!!  Got any ideas to make it go away?

-Spay abort the bitch
-Cull the pups when they're born
-If it's within 72hrs of the tie, vet can do an abortion shot

I'm not sure how to make it go away, but this is one of those things where I would only trust a vet.  On another note....some very nice dogs have come from accidental breeding.  I've been thinking about getting a catch dog cross pup.  If she has them, let me know, I may be interested.

Yeah I know its not the best option and normally wouldnt even think about it.  Just puts a good catchdog out of commision and I have no need for the pups.  Its my fault.  I thought the two dogs chains were far enough apart.

I've seen the abortion shot ruin a few good gyps. They never took again. I would not do it if I thought much of her.

I second that reply, I just got thru with this myself. My vet told me not to abort the pups if i ever wanted to breed the gyp agin. She said it will screw up the hormones and future breeding will be problematic. She advised me to schedule a spay, or let her have them. So we let her have them. Its like she knew she couldn't hunt with puppies, she killed all of them (Not by choice). And now shes dried up ready to rock and roll!

I looked into this same question a few weeks ago. I did my own research then talked with my vet. I came to the conclusion that a man has 3 options. Take the dog to the vet and have it spayed and pups aborted, take to vet and get the abortion shots that could cause seriouse issues at later dates and may or may not make the gyp never have another litter, or just wait it out and deal with pups how u see fit. The last option is in my opinion the best if u ever want pups off the gyp. If u don't want pups off her just have her spayed.

I don't like a gyp on a chain because aany roaming dog can lock up with her.

But you said it was your fault so being down a catchdog is your fault. Not trying to be a jerk just the facts. A hunt catchdog cross can be a really good dog or not. I would have the pups because any other choice can ruin the dog for good. Culling the pups right away can mess a dog up too. I would put here in a box. I always keep unlimited food for a gyp with pups. The pups start eating food as soon as they can get in the bowl. You can then get them off the gyp easier and right on time. If they are two dogs people will be glad to take pups. Lots pf people will take a chance on that cross. So the pups can be out of your yard and the gyp back to work with no chance of messing her up.

Good luck
I had same exact problem, figured no problem the pups could be given away.  Put them in dog trade last wk as free only 2 contacted me  they were both txt msg so you know they were not serious anyhow!  Had no idea I wouldn't be able to give away as good if dogs as the parents are.

Oh I wasnt trying to be a jerk either.  Hard to tell in a typed message but just a bad attempt at humor I guess.  Ill prob let her have the pups.  She is a good female and I dont want to take any risk of screwing her up.  But have have also had enough litters to know that this is the worste time of yr to sell a puppy to a hunter.  No one wants a puppy during hunting season.  Oh well thanks for the input

Find an old school vet and ask for an estrogen shot. a couple potential risks involed... could get yeast infection or possibly be barren. I gave it to my gyp who got off the chain and mated with 2 males back to back before I caught her. No complication and no pups. she came in to heat again 2 weeks ago

Purebreedcolt dex won't abort pups but it will dry a gyp up after taking the pups off and pull her tits back up!

There was a study done on dex and it did abort pups. Doseage and side effects are listed on the site provided. I contemplated both but using dex was never used traditionally so i decided to go with the estrogen shot

Clinical use of dexamethasone for termination of unwanted pregnancy in dogs. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9404290

They dont advertise it but it does work. The reason I went with the estrogen shot is because I needed a quick fix on my gyp. It was summer and i didnt want her to miss out on the hunting because she just made 2yrs old and was coming along nicely. If it would have made her barren I would be kicking myself in the pooter. If it would have happened in last week in the "winter" cycle I would have let her have them to keep from the risks of the shots
