Title: gotta question
Post by: heavyhitter89 on October 23, 2013, 10:30:55 am
I got into a bind here recently and needed a rougher cur dog, so I made a swap with a buddy of mine, the dog I traded was a hound cross that hunted great with me. and now wont hunt to much with my buddy, I ran that dog since he was a puppy and I think that since he has only hunted with me and my other dogs that could be a reason why he aint hunting for my buddy, any suggestions on how to get him to start hunting with my buddy? He has plenty of hunt in him and has struck many hogs for me but my buddy said some does he wont even respond to his dogs bays.. just thought I wwould ask for a little advise helping him out... I don't like getting burned and I don't want him to think im  burning him with a cull dog.. ive offered to swap back but he likes the dog just wants it to hunt like he knows he can hunt. I suggested maybe pinning his main dog up with him think that would help?

Some dogs won't hunt for anybody else and it may just take time I have a hard headed hound that if he doesent strike the hog he doesent want any part of it also but I have seen dogs take a few months to get use to somebody else espically if u were their only owner

Penning him with another dog may help but spending time with the dog will also help. A one on one run may also help. Like stated some dogs are just slow to adjust to new home and new owners. Had a cat gyp I kept for 6 months and never did get her to hunt. Took her back to a buddy and the next week she was hunting fine for him with his dogs.

I'v seen this many times ,I have noticed the smarter the dog the more attached they become to the handler . I have taken dogs that wouldn't hunt for other people ,take the time to let the dog adjust to you and your dogs and you might find a hunting partner !!! HUNT'UM  UP

x2...take the dog for walks on lease and make friends with him...he will hunt again once he accepts the new owner...
