Title: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: KevinN on October 24, 2013, 03:34:02 pm I've got a domestic boar I've had for a little over a year. I haven't fed him out on that high protein stuff...just creep feed, and a bag of pig and sow every so often ... plus table scraps of course. I plan on slaughtering this winter. I've heard your suppose to finish them out on corn the last month or so. I've already started on the corn.
Guys that have raised pigs....What's the purpose of finishing on corn? Makes the meat better? Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: Muddogkennels on October 24, 2013, 03:57:47 pm Have u barred him yet if not he's still going to taste good anyways .. I think finishing them off with corn just butters them up before killing.

I know all the old timers used to do it but you take the commercial hog farmers & if they dont make their own feed, they use a hog finisher feed. My uncle used to use a combination of peanuts & corn that he ground it all together, shells & all for his hogs. Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: Shotgun wg on October 24, 2013, 07:21:35 pm U are correct. Corn is not high in fat or protein. Corn is high in sugar and starch which is high carbohydrates. Pig finisher is also low fat. Most runs around 4%. It is high in carbohydrates. Both serve the same purpose of increasing carb intake which in turn produces fat in what eats it.

Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: BA-IV on October 24, 2013, 07:41:25 pm I'd cut him first... use chopped corn instead of whole corn. Chopped or cracked and they'll digest it far better...we've always finished hogs on corn and sometimes a steer. Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: Reuben on October 24, 2013, 08:50:37 pm I'd cut him first... use chopped corn instead of whole corn. x2...and soak it over night to make it more digestible...I would castrate him as well... Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: KevinN on October 24, 2013, 10:02:49 pm Castrate this late in the game?
Probably slaughter him in what....2 1/2 - 3 months. Will it make that big a difference? Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: hillbilly on October 24, 2013, 10:10:05 pm Castrate this late in the game? yes it will make a difference. 3 months is plenty of time to feed out after you cut himProbably slaughter him in what....2 1/2 - 3 months. Will it make that big a difference? Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: Judge peel on October 24, 2013, 10:21:36 pm We use to feed the sweet cakes and cup cakes from a locale bakeries the problem with the protein feeds are they will make the meat to lean and dry jmo

Will it make that big a difference? Not arguing just trying to learn/understand. What will it do barring the hog for just a short time? I know over a long period they put on weight because they are running around chasing sows....just eating. This Boar is all by his lonesomes now, in a 16X16 pen. He doesn't RUN anywhere, lol. Testosterone? Maybe make the meat taste better? Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: OWL Black Mouth Curs on October 25, 2013, 03:15:41 am it will take the "stink" out of the meat. he will also finish better, and have a better feed conversion. more meat, and "fattier" better marbled meat. he won't be as tough and dry.

Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: Yeller on October 27, 2013, 09:59:09 pm Corn does clean em out but it will make a big difference in the meat texture also My family always raised meat hogs throughout my childhood but didn't figure out about the difference in the meat until we killed three woods hogs that had been fed out and three straight out of the woods. corn = marble texture
Title: Re: Finishing a hog on corn Post by: t crump on October 30, 2013, 01:50:21 am I would cut him first put him on hog finisher for about 60 days that pig in the pic already has about the right amount of fat on him now. Then enjoy
