Post by: Fixitlouie on October 26, 2013, 03:33:00 pm
Customer has few thousand acres. He says full of hogs. He has a retired police dog. I said lets see him work...would ya know that dog hunted and catches. ..if I didn't see it I wouldn't believe it...its a German shepherd. If I can figure out how to post videos I will share

Hunted with a guy in chattfield a couple times that had a German shepherd house pet and an old Catahoula. They struck and caught a decent boar when he was fishing a stock tank out there.

I'm really not surprised. My family raised German import shepherds and they had awesome noses for tracking. We had one that had as strong a bite as I've ever seen. That was before we hog hunted though. They are very very smart and I could see them being good strike and catch dogs.

That's awesome. I think a lot of breeds are capable, it's whether they WANT to or not, lol.

Never owned a German Shepherd, but have owned and worked with Belgian Malinois.  I've seen those dogs use their noses and strength for the military but haven't heard them being used for hunting, till recently. Curious to know how they do and how well they do, does anyone hunt with a Belgian Mal?

I started out with schutzhund dogs long before I got into hog dogs. I've believed from day one the the right GSD or  Mal could make an amazing hog dog. Im working on getting my cur dogs where I want them.  But once that is done I plan on working a GSD or Mal into my program. Whether a straight bred dog or a cross. I have more experience with GSDs than mals, but given the  right dog I know they could do the job!

I saw on one of your hunts you posted, you had what I thought was a Mal with you.  Between their build for speed, strength and how smart they can be, I wondered how they'd do on a hunt but know how they can be overly energetic and a complete spaz. But I agree with you, they always need a job and with the right dog I think they could do it.
