Title: Lab CD Post by: CMK hog hunter on November 13, 2013, 12:19:17 pm I just got a lab GSP mix he is very energetic and has a bigger head than most catch dog pups, has anyone ever used a lab to be a catch dog, I have heard some will make good strike dogs just not to sure about how good they will catch. Has anyone ever used a lab as a Catch dog?
Title: Re: Lab CD Post by: SaltyhoggerJr on November 13, 2013, 01:28:10 pm I've seen labs catch with other dogs but I've never seen anyone with a lab catch dog. I guess they could be a catch dog. If you can teach lab bird dogs to force fetch maybe you can teach them to force catch lol.

My lab that runs loose around my yard ran straight in like a catch dog and caught. No hesitation whatsoever. Shocked the hell out of me. If you look closely at the picture he's the yellow dog on the left side. Also had a walker lab cross that looked just like a black lab named Hoss. He was straight catch.

Smart dogs. I'd imagine one may catch if they wanted to, but my concern would be if they had to take a whoopin while they were supposed to be holding if they'd hang in there or not....

A Mediocre catch dog can get you hurt in a hurry. I think I'd stick with dogs that were bred for the job they are to be used for. Title: Re: Lab CD Post by: Shotgun wg on November 13, 2013, 06:33:50 pm I know a guy that runs a lab pit cross for catch dog. He does real good. My male lab (duck dog) caught a shoat once. Lol. I do believe if set to it he would do ok but not sure if I would want him as a cd.
