with this colder weather turn the dog houses facing south to block the north wind...as the temperature drops increase the feed to make sure the dog maintains weight...some dogs will need more food than other dogs for different reasons...short coated dogs that don't have that short undercoat will burn more calories trying to stay warm so they will need a higher food intake to maintain weight...a dry dog house and hay will keep the dogs warm...some dogs are allergic to hay so keep that in mind...you don't need any dog to freeze to death...

Yes and I have a female about to pop I have some blankets in the barrel will the pups be ok if their born tonight ide like to bring her in the house but wife will kill me

No box for pups to be born? Barrels ain't the best for Whelping. Man I don't know...that set up I'd probably move them into garage until you get a box. Just me.

You best bring her in I wouldn't risk it

Always like seeing general dog maintenance tips thrown up for folks newer to the sport or folks that simply lack on the general knowledge of how to take care of their dogs.

So many out their that lack in all aspects of dog care is crazy and sad.

Lack of knowledge is understood .........Lack of caring is intolerable.

I coupled my dogs up plus dry hay. I got 4 that r thinned coated n 1 cant use his back leg bc the cold is hurtin his leg that got broke n pinned back together. Iv been feeding a powder type feed and i like u said reuben, puttin more feed out for them, plus i mix the feed with water to help with digestion and iv tripled their rations plus mixing it with hot water to put somethn warm in the stomachs so hopefully they'll go bed down with a belly full of hot feed.

Try putting a heat lamp or drop light with bulb painted black in the barrel, it'll at least keep it warm in there, but like kevin said, barrel aint the best whelping house, if u want the pups to live n keep the momma from laying on them in that tight of quarters

colt...pups can't regulate body temp until about 2.5 weeks of age...they pile up to get warm and the dam provide the heat...so a garage and a heat light will work great...of course survival of the fittest with a little common sense can be practiced to a certain extent...  ;)

really doesn't get super cold here in Southeast Texas either. Hot one day cold the next. It varies.

I've doubled the feed and also added a lil milk replacer and rice bran oil to their feed when cold snaps come in. Dry hay is a must. Good post.

Easy spaz I know you remember the winter we had four years or so ago.   :-[

Hell I went through plenty of winters in central Fl where it hit the 20's.....

I hunted 3 of my dogs today for 5 r 6 hrs,we bayed but never got nothing caught.i have put all my dog boxes on my trailer and loaded dogs up,and parkedit under the shed and put 3 heat lites on them,feed them up real good 2 hrs ago,hope not to hav a big mess in morning,they should be warm,calling for sleet in north louisiana tonite.have 13.just wat i do wen it gets cold.,stuffed boxes full of hay.

Okay when we get our cold snap, they get a hot meal. i would welcome some cooler weather, but nothing under 38.  Lol
