Title: Young dog - rookie trainer Post by: Bowhunter1994 on December 08, 2013, 10:31:37 pm I have never trained hog dogs so this is my first one I am training. Today was his first real hunt and he found a hog within minutes from being dropped, he is hunting alone so I didn't expect him to stop the pig, At least not at this age.
He is 10 months and pretty gritty! But smart enough to not bite off more than he can chew. He has no quit in him once he is in game mode!! But today he got out ran! Should I keep hunting him alone? Worries me to have him alone and him run into a pack of hogs. What doe you all think?? I wouldn't worry much about sounders if he's not just catchy rough. Sounds like he's doing good.

Title: Re: Young dog - rookie trainer Post by: BA-IV on December 09, 2013, 01:52:00 pm Hunting a dog alone will make him rely on himself and it will definitely mature him into a hog dog.
I wouldn't worry about him, and would never expect him to be outran, he's ten months, he's old enough to finish most races if he has the bottom and drive. Title: Re: Young dog - rookie trainer Post by: hoghunter71409 on December 09, 2013, 03:10:46 pm Hunt him alone and keep doing what you are doing.
Just becuase you hunt him with another dog doesnt mean they are going to stay together. I cant tell you how many times I have have mutiple dogs on the ground and they all go one way-except for one dog, he goes the other way. I think the one dog that goes by himself usually ends up to be the dog that bays. He has never chased a pig, he has been in the pen and released one that was hobbled. So he hasn't actually ever chased one , but I know he will get the hang of it sooner than later!

This is his second time out and once again hunted alone Keep it up, at 10 months i wouldn't be mad about him getting out ran BUT in 4-6 months looking back and knowing he has been hunting and finding hogs since he was 10 months old i would expect him to have things pretty well figured out. Sounds like he's well on his way to making a dog. Duke caught him about 30 yards away from trap... Good boy duke!!!
