Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: dodgegirl on January 09, 2014, 01:56:38 pm Do you want a dog that will actually run a deer or just a blood trackin dog? We've always had good luck with redbones for running them. And for blood tracking we've used beagles. My neighbor had for some cool blue ticks that he runs deer with
Title: Re: Post by: Lacy man on January 09, 2014, 02:06:55 pm I use Lacys that work pretty well

Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: halfbreed on January 09, 2014, 04:46:38 pm the hounds can trail anything but are bad about leaving a cold trail [ which is what most blood jobs are ] and taking a hotter track .
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Mpbarrs on January 09, 2014, 06:01:18 pm The terriers do pretty good

One with a good nose and brains that can take the right track an stick it out to the end. I've seen a cat a bmc and a lacy cross all get it done. Do your homework ask ?'s and hope it all works out.

Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Reuben on January 09, 2014, 08:44:33 pm mt cur all the way...or a wiener dog...
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: brushbusters on January 10, 2014, 07:02:43 am Lab would find a dead one, what's it gonna do when the deer still has it's legs?
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: thegroundskeeper on January 10, 2014, 07:49:45 am I have a catahoula and BMC that blood trail for me. They are great for trailing and even better if we get there and the deer is still alive. Got a friend that uses a lab he will tear the hide off one if he gets to it and its alive.
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: hoghunter71409 on January 10, 2014, 12:42:00 pm Lab would find a dead one, what's it gonna do when the deer still has it's legs? I've seen some very fine labs and I think that some of them labs can do ANYTHING and cur dog do..if not more. Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: brushbusters on January 10, 2014, 02:08:59 pm Lab would find a dead one, what's it gonna do when the deer still has it's legs? I've seen some very fine labs and I THINK that some of them labs can do ANYTHING and cur dog do..if not more. I fixed it for ya Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Mike on January 10, 2014, 02:11:17 pm I'd like to see the lab that can do anything a cur dog can do..
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: colecross on January 10, 2014, 05:18:20 pm Iam with you mike,i would like to also see the lab that can do anything a cur can do.
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: hoghunter71409 on January 10, 2014, 06:15:41 pm I'd like to see the lab that can do anything a cur dog can do.. Some of the competition and hard hunting labs will swim further than some of todays cur dogs will hunt out. If you want to see some good lab dogs, quit making jabs at me about my post and get your a$$ off the internet and go see some working labs; you'll be impressed. That will probably get me kicked off here LOL rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: brushbusters on January 10, 2014, 06:35:02 pm Are they swimming the blood trail?
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Mike on January 10, 2014, 06:35:10 pm I've seen good labs work, I guided hog hunts for several years on a 68,000 acre duck/goose hunting club with some very wealthy members with some very fine dogs.
You show me a lab that can run a hog for 10, 20 plus miles and be bayed when you get there... no matter how many hours it takes. And if you want to be a do itin smart ass... I'll be glad to kick you off this site. Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Mike on January 10, 2014, 06:54:23 pm I didn't make a jab at your post either, just replying to the statement you made. That would be like me saying a good weenie dog can do anything a plott hound can do... there's no comparison between the two.
Some of y'all boys need to quit being so damn sensitive. Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: hillbilly on January 10, 2014, 06:56:17 pm Bulldog so it will catch it.
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Reuben on January 10, 2014, 07:07:39 pm I have seen plenty of sorry cur dogs that will not take a track on their own...but you put a good dog out with that dog that won't take a track and now that no good dog becomes a good me too dog and the inexperienced will think he is a good dog...and with blood trailing and some training he will make a deer tracking dog...
Now train that good hunting dog that will stick with a track to track deer and then you will probably see a big difference in ability between those 2 dogs...there is no doubt which one of those 2 dogs I would invest my time training... Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: andersoncountydogger on January 10, 2014, 07:30:10 pm Wasn't trying to start a fight I've heard really good things about labs feist and everything just wanted some imput I think if a dog will work you can put him on anything
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Shotgun wg on January 10, 2014, 10:59:49 pm I have seen good labs that could blood trail with the best of them. Blood trailing is one of those things that lots of breeds fit the bill and can do the job well. Never seen a lab that could stay with a runner 20 miles. Never seen a cur that could swim a mile in rough seas either while carrying a duck in his mouth. Different breeds bred for different jobs that have a job or 2 in common.

You need a dog with drive... And bottom to finish the track without giving up.. Sonny Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: BassCatBates on January 16, 2014, 01:11:23 pm I have a bloodhound that is a pretty salty blood dog. took a bad shot nearly a mile last season and bayed it twice before the deer finally gave up. I've been very pleased with him. AND he's done most of it naturally, I have only worked him a little bit. Go's to show that it's hard to beat natural talent.
Title: Re: deer dogs Post by: Clark G on January 17, 2014, 05:39:53 pm I run a lacy and a redbone/cat cross. Hound has a better nose, works a little slower, and has a little more size to bring a live one down or get him bleeding again( most calls are live deer). I have a couple of cur/hound pups that are going to be amazing. I have a friend that runs a lab and a lab/plott cross. The tough part for the labs in texas is that they seem to get hot quicker than the curs. She will stop and rest though. My curs scare me because they will run themselves to death. Dog has to be able to bay IMO because most lost deer are not dead. It will be a catch situation. Good luck man!! I love it! So do my kids!
