Title: Genes
Post by: Swine Stoppers on August 22, 2009, 09:28:15 pm
??????????????? I bought a dog from a guy last year from who raised her as a puppy. He bobbed her tail whenever she was young. I read an article or heard it from someone i cant remember what it was, that if a dog received something such as a bobbed tail or something of that sort at a young age it is possible that it could be passed on. Now my bobbed tailed gyp just had puppies yesterday and i got to lookin at them earlier and 2 of the puppies have bobbed tails while the rest have regular long tails. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? If you have a chance read lamarcks theory of evolution.

I think that one or both of the dogs you bred have some bobtail dogs in their ancestory..

I dont think it is passed on, I have seen hundreds of pits with clipped ears and have yet to see one born with its ears clipped.

It takes one on each side some where in the pedigree. It would be the same as prick ears and blue eyes. There has to be a bobtailed dog in both the sire and the dam's pedigree some where it may be a long way back. Short of story it takes two to tango!

It doesn't take one on each side of the pedigree . . . can be passed on from one parent. Acquired traits like docked tails can not be inherited by offspring. Never, not under any circumstances. Otherwise kids would be born with their ears pierced and tattoos to match the ones their parents have. The Lamarck Theory was great, except for the fact that it was proven false about 100 years ago.
