Post by: Shotgun wg on January 19, 2014, 10:58:43 pm While I do agree most folks miss guess the weight of hogs. I will say a scale don't lie. That is if it's not messed up but even then a 15 pound variance is a lot. I do guess the weight of pigs and I'm sure I miss them at times. If it's a big one I'm gonna brag about I use a scale. Lol with pictures.

Lol with pictures. Shotgun Arkansas I agree shotgun, that article really doesn't surprise me much either honestly, except for the last paragraph stating that a 200lb hog is "huge", i'd have to disagree. a 200 lb hog is a good hog no doubt but my definition of a huge hog would be a hog close to or over 300lbs. I have been hog hunting the better part of my life one way or another, not always with dogs but still. I have only caught/shot/trapped a 1/2 dozen hogs over 300lbs in my life and I consider 300lbs to be a stud hog. I've never killed one over 400 and only seen one in real life with my own eyes that my dad shot on our old deer lease in nome texas back when I was a young boy, some 15-20 years ago. There have been some studs posted on this site through the years as well. Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: Jaredmiko on January 20, 2014, 08:50:23 am I couldn't believe that they thought an adult feral hog averaged 118lbs I mean that's really light to me

Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: Reuben on January 20, 2014, 10:30:57 am Back in the early 1990's I worked with an engineer that graduated at the top of his class...he swore up and down that there were no 200 pound hogs...he never shot one and never seen one...he told me that when I was telling him my brother and I caught them on a regular basis...I didn't try to argue the point because he knew everything...
Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: charles on January 20, 2014, 12:32:36 pm There ya go reuben, a high dollar education with a piece of paper, and still no smatter or possibly dumber than when he graduated high school. Where did he graduate from with that high dollar degree?
Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: Cajun on January 20, 2014, 08:34:41 pm Hogs vary so much from region to region. Hogs in our marsh, a big boar would average around 200-225. On the other hand, hogs in agriculture country get way bigger. It all depends on how much they have to eat.
There are exceptions too. Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: Reuben on January 20, 2014, 08:39:03 pm I once saw a hog by the O'Conner ranch south of Victoria that probably weighed 700 plus...his track looked like it belonged to an 800 pound steer...
Cajun is right...I have seen small boars with 2.5 inch cutters that probably weighed in at 100 pounds...they appeared to be mature boars... Title: Re: Post by: slckhunter1978 on January 20, 2014, 09:13:21 pm I agree if ur gonna brag about weight best to actually weigh the hog. Over here n west louisiana a 200lb hog is a dang good hog. 300 and over is a trophy to me. Caught one right b4 deer season that weighed n at 347lbs but only had like 2.5" long cutters. That was biggest ever with my dogs. Killed one i would say closer to 400 off the deer stand along time ago but did not weigh him. Have caught a few sows close around 200 and round here that is a huge sow! All depends on where they r and what they r eatn tho. They tend to git fat round deer season for some reason round here! Lol

Post by: Jaredmiko on January 20, 2014, 09:16:08 pm Is like to take the guy who wrote this hunting but that would prob cause him to right one heck of paper when 2, 17 year olds and a 65 year old man tell him he don't know what he Is writing about ;D lol!
Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: Shotgun wg on January 20, 2014, 09:25:54 pm I had a guy I started hunting with that would swear there was no such thing as a 300 pound hog. He said that hadn't anybody anywhere around killed one over 200. Well I showed him pics of hogs and scales that showed plenty over 200 and some that broke 270 and 1 that went 380. All of these were scaled hogs and he still acted like I was lying. Well he finally killed one that was about 280. From then on he hardly ever killed a hog under 200 according to him. A 125 hog turned into a good one if he killed it and little if u killed it. Gotta love folks that want to be famous. Lol
I kinda got side tracked. Lol I hunt a lot in Ag areas that raise corn beans and rice. Shotgun Arkansas Title: Re: You gotta read this!! Post by: djhogdogger on January 20, 2014, 09:51:18 pm For the area that we hunt which is large grain farms. I would agree with the article. Most of the adult hogs that we catch are between 80 and 150. We do catch hogs in the 200 range but they are BIG hogs. The biggest one that we have put on the scales went 278lbs. and it was a massive sow. I know that there are bigger hogs out there but where we hunt they are few and far between. They are the trophies that keep us trying to catch the ultimate hog.
