Title: Tote cage to ATV rack
Post by: Swine-Stalker on January 22, 2014, 09:09:57 am
It has been a while since I posted here. A few of you found my Samurai box/rack build interesting so I am posting my sons new ATV rack. Build time 2-4 hrs

Take a simple tote cage like this and find the dimensions you want in a corner. Using a corner eliminates extra cutting and welding. Ones side will be your floor and the other your upright for snaps.

I screwed plywood to the bottom, welded angle iron across the top of the upright, and U bolted the dog rack to the 4 wheeler box

Took measurements for the side of the box, and cut more tote to fit then screwed it on (didn't feel like welding that day). Then drilled holes in the angle iron to connect the snaps to.

Painted the rack black to match the ATV. Cut rubber hose from work to fit and wrap the metal for looks and noise reduction. Wrapped the hose with electrical tape.

Not the fanciest dog rack but a sturdy and functional rack for the man on a budget. My little boy (9yrs old) will be able to feel like part of the team now with his own bike and dog rack.

That looks good and like u said, an easy, but extremely effective budget build. With my rack, i think i may have around $100 in material alone that was bought for a previous build and the metal was left over. Gonna have to buy another stick of 3/4" thick sqr tubing for the backrest/gate.

Thanks. Tote was free, angle iron was left over, hose and tape was free. I am in mine $10 for snaps lol. Even if only the tote was the only thing free youre looking at $30-$50. I know most hunters are on a budget so I felt obligated to share the build.

I like it!  Nothing wrong with that.

Be careful,  I made something almost exactly like that I had 4 medium size dogs on the back of mine.  Ended up breaking the under carriage frame of my bike.  Its in the shop now.  The weight of the dogs and the bumpy terrain made for a deadly combination for my bike.

I think I'll be building one of these next week. Oddly enough I have a tote cage in my back yard.

Good idea always on the look for diy projects that save money but allow u to enjoy the activity without going broke
