Post by: dallas22 on January 29, 2014, 09:24:44 pm
I live in the city and im just getting started with the hog dogs. Was just wondering how many dogs y'all have , what kind of pens and how u keep the smell down. Also what u do with a barking dog?

I don't live in the city anymore thank the Lord but I can give you some advice from when I did. back then I only had about 6 dogs.
I used to keep my dogs in welded kennels on concrete bases. Hosed them out daily of course, and sprinkled lime down around the perimeter where any stool was. Once a week I sprayed bleach down in the kennels. Never had any odor issues. As for barking, if you have any barking issues, bark collars work wonders.

wooden fence around the back yard. Keep the kennels low so you cant see them from the street. Go ahead and buy tri tronic bark collars for every dog you have. They are worth the extra cost.

When I was living in the city I had 8 dogs in the yard at one point.  Three ran around the yard and the rest were in kennels.  I didn't have to worry about noise during the day because I was home a lot but I put $40 bark collars from Walmart on the noisey ones at night.  I cleaned kennels every other day and just put it back in the empty feed bags and put it out on trash day.  I never had a complaint until I moved back out of the city and got some sorry neighbors.

I live in the city keep 3-6 dogs at a time. I have above the ground kennels .
I clean kennels everyday and use feedbags to dispose of waste. Every other week I spray kennels down good.
I use tri tronic bark collars until they learn to not bark.
MOST IMPORTANT thing to do is make sure you have open line of communication between you and your neighbors.
My neighbors come to me first if theres a issue instead of calling the city.
they know how much my dogs mean to me so they know ill do what needs to be done to fix problem.

Right now just have one, female bulldog.  Really don't want anything permanent. Thinking about building above ground kennel over concrete pavers. Had even thought about  using a carport cover as the foundation, of the kennel. Collect waste and take out with the trash or build a septic tank for kennel. Lime Bleach cedar shavings for odor. Dawn dish liquid to kill fleas.

well I only lived in the city once right after I got married the last time . had my beagle pack and my old coon hound and I found that keeping my neighbors supplied with meat and fish and fresh produce from the garden worked wonders with any complaint issues that might arise  .

I have had up to ten dogs in town and a litter of pups...I used a red rider about 3 or 4 back to back and they learned pretty quick for barking control...a training collar on the hard headed ones and they learn pretty quick...I have a good sized yard and I have a 6 ft cedar fence around it and concrete floors for the kennels which are 6'X10'X10' kennels on the slabs...have water piped up with auto watering...also let dogs out to run in the back yard once a day and shovel poop from kennels/yard into five gallon bucket with liner and lid once a day also...wash down kennels every day...feed dogs once a day and pups 2-3 times a day when I have them...

Dump poop in trash liner every Monday and Thursday for city to pick up along with the household trash...dogs will keep one busy...

Here in australia if you live in the city you're only allowed to have 2 dogs, period. Plenty of guys make that work though. A common duo is a sighthound x bull and a bull x mastiff. The sighthound bull can catch just about anything on it's own, the odd monster that gives it trouble will be brought to it's knees when the big heavy hanger lumbers in as back up.

The other benefit is neither of these dog types make noise. Both number 2 a lot though, lol. No way around that.

Would 4ft wide and 8 ft deep kennels be too small for 75lb dogs or smaller?
