Title: 2/22/14, Stags and Dogos Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 27, 2014, 09:22:41 pm We branded cattle all day today and got done just in time to make a little hunt. I loaded my two Dogo pups, 13 months old, and an finished Stag and a green 14 month old Stag. Today was the day to start hauling the Dogos on their own. I have sent them behind or with some solid holding dogs to make sure they they were well started.
The young dogs earned their strips today and did it with style. I was working some wheat ground and sent the stags to a set of small pigs and caught one. Loaded and keep rolling and saw a good boar trotting off the other end of the field. I got in a a better spot for the dog and kicked the two straight stags from 200yds. The boar was only 100yds from the edge of the wheat with some rough canyon country just across the fence. The stags caught up to him at the fence and flew off into the rough country. They had him stopped 200 yds off in the brush. They were working that boar but could not catch him, he was just standing his ground and fighting. I send the Dogos from 200yds and they rolled right to the boar. I was running in behind and heard the hit up. They handled him no problem. Question - how do your stags hold up to the heat? Was hunting in Dickens weekend before last. Turned my stag/AB cross into a rally about 80 yards, caught hog. She rolled out to the next hog 817 yds and caught. I am hunting on a broken leg right now so it took me about ten minutes to get to them. She was caught, with the other dogs, on a 200lb boar. She was hot. I mean rubber leg hot. Got her cooled down and put her up. Did not let her out for two days just to be safe cause you know how they run around when you turn them out to exercise. She seems fine now. It was mid 70's when we hunted. She was not wearing a vest. She had not been run on the ground during the hunt. My 75lb bulldog was in the entire race in full cut gear and was nowhere near as hot as she was. Granted, my fault for them fighting for so long, but the "help" I had was sub par and I was was on crutches. Sound normal to you or is she hot natured? Dog is two years old in June. The crosses will hold till they fall over, the straights will get hot and let go for a bit and cool off. Conditioning is very important for this type of dog when it starts warming up. The better they are legged up the better they stand the heat.

Smart running catch dog, will pack up with my cur dog for a mile or so to catch, hunts a little like a cur on hot scent. Good dogs!
