Post by: justincorbell on March 20, 2014, 07:14:16 am I've got a female jack russell terrier that I use to fire up my pups, while I can't say that i've used her in true big woods on an uncontrolled hunt there ain't a doubt in my mind that she would take off hunting if I gave her the chance lol. I raise all my pups up with her and I honestly believe that she has made a big difference in getting my pups started faster and earlier than I could on my own, I believe as far as the pups go that they have a "mokey see monkey do" mentality, I've used her multiple times with multiple different pups and the results have been the same everytime. I drop her and let her take the pups to the hog on mock hunts and every single time they have started baying before I ever got to the hog because they follow her and do whatever it is that she is doing at the time not even realizing they are doing it. After I use her 2 or 3 times with a pup I don't even have to bring her as the pups have it figured out and will do it on their own. If she wasn't my little girls pet I would probly tote her to the woods just for the hell of it, I know that she is a piglet/ shoat catchin fool haha.

Title: Re: Crazy dog breeds used while hunting!! Post by: Treezbulldogz on March 20, 2014, 07:49:00 am Maybe it's the city boy in me that thought the "coon treeing contest" at the county fair was kind of funny. Never heard such a thing. I know a old hog hunter that uses Bavarian Mountain Hounds. Unless I'm mistaking I don't believe they're popular with hog hunters.
Title: Re: Post by: Purebreedcolt on March 20, 2014, 09:15:14 am There is 2 breeds I want to try one is thia ridgeback and a standard poodle. Both of the ones I have heard about being used are catchy

They are from Vietnam, so you know for sure that if they don't hunt, they will at least be delicious over some noodles! Title: Re: Post by: Rocking Y on March 20, 2014, 02:10:50 pm Oh ok I didn't see the Thai part. They might turn out pretty good, just a chance you'll never know til you try

Post by: Goose87 on March 20, 2014, 07:19:06 pm Used to be a guy around here who had a Golden retriever lab mix that was a straight catch dog. He used him in the catch competitions we used to have around here years ago and was a heck of a bay dog in the swamp and would catch on command there. My wife's great grandpa would use one of those lassie type collies as a catch dog when they used to do their annual cutting and marking in the swamps many moons ago.
Title: Re: Crazy dog breeds used while hunting!! Post by: aussie black mouth curs on March 20, 2014, 08:55:16 pm There seemed to be a period here in the late 80"s and 90's when all sorts of dogs were used for pig hunting. Some I can think of (normally crossed)
doberman, rottweiler, vizsla, dalmation, curly coated retrievers, boxer crosses (still popular), sure there are others I've forgotten. Title: Re: Crazy dog breeds used while hunting!! Post by: Txhogman22 on March 20, 2014, 08:59:28 pm Belgian Malinois.

Post by: TheRednose on March 20, 2014, 11:21:11 pm Belgian Malinois awesome! I have seen them imported ones, their prey drive is through the roof and alot of them have great noses too, not to mention their athletic ability.
How does your's hunt txhogman? Title: Re: Crazy dog breeds used while hunting!! Post by: Cowdogs85 on March 21, 2014, 09:08:10 am Iv got Border Collies and Australian Shepards and they are strait catch no questions asked. Good quiet cow dogs but put them on a hog and they are foaming from the mouth and acting like wild wolves. I use them to teach pups to catch and it dang sure works. Don't count out my hairy sheep dogs.. Lol

Title: Re: Crazy dog breeds used while hunting!! Post by: Txhogman22 on March 21, 2014, 10:21:11 pm How does your's hunt txhogman? I acquired her from a good buddy and he put a lot of work into her. Your right super high prey drive with only 1 gear, hyper drive. Hasn't found her own hog, but is fast as lighting to the bay. I plan to use her as my catch dog. I run gritty dog that will catch anything under 200. Anything over they just need a trigger. She is definitely that. This grain season will be here big test. I'm sure she'll do fine.
