Title: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: NorthZulchNasty on April 06, 2014, 08:21:24 pm I run closed mouth dogs, always have. I recently bought a semi open dog, he found a hog this morning, just don't know if I can get used to it. Seems like he would be pushing the hogs? Opinions?

Post by: Jared H. on April 06, 2014, 08:48:33 pm I'm thinking of running a pointer. As long as he shows treed on my garmin I'll know he's looking at a hog. Probably wouldn't ever have a race if a dog would find a hog and never bark at it, just point. ;D
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: MFKennels on April 06, 2014, 08:48:42 pm Your just down the road from me but theres not a.hog that doesn't run these days so its up to you. As long as the dog is fast on the track or will stay hooked why does it matter.Every body is.different and has there opinions
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: hoghunter71409 on April 06, 2014, 08:50:13 pm There are a lot of threads about this already- I suggest reading through a couple of them.
Some main topics of the thread were: Open dogs can push a hog and make one run more, but the good open mouth dogs still get the job done. Some hogs will run regardless of the dogs being open or closed and once the hog breaks, they will run no matter what. Other environmental factors such as hunting sounds (talking, tailgates, 4 wheelers) may also make a hog run before dogs ever put on the ground- and its possible to make noise and still walk up on a bedded hog. Title: Re: Post by: Peachcreek on April 06, 2014, 08:57:43 pm A dog that barks on track never bay a hog.
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: To_The_Bone on April 06, 2014, 09:04:31 pm That's BS!! I've had both open and closed and have never heard of that I've seen hogs found and bayed as well as run and stopped by both opened and closed dogs
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: NorthZulchNasty on April 06, 2014, 09:05:59 pm I don't agree with that....he found the hog and was baying until we turned the bulldog loose. What are you referring to?
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: MFKennels on April 06, 2014, 09:09:08 pm Peaches you are going to start some stuff on here!! Hahaha
Title: Re: Post by: hoghunter71409 on April 06, 2014, 09:15:04 pm A dog that barks on track never bay a hog. "never".....really? This is either ignorance or you just haven't hunted behind a good open dog or dogs. Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: Hunt the Grunt on April 07, 2014, 07:41:07 am I'm thinking of running a pointer. As long as he shows treed on my garmin I'll know he's looking at a hog. Probably wouldn't ever have a race if a dog would find a hog and never bark at it, just point. ;D Thats about all I run is pointers and pointer crosses. They don't point though lol. Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: Judge peel on April 07, 2014, 08:58:10 am I have run them both ways and mixed up my opion is that hogs that run will run so I don't see much differents if the dog is fast and not just runing and barking at nothing you will be just fine
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: Reuben on April 07, 2014, 08:00:36 pm with a dog that opens some you know when they strike a hot track or jump a hog and know which direction they are headed...
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: Nannyslayer on April 07, 2014, 11:49:44 pm I hunt both, that way I have all the bases covered. ;D
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: t-dog on April 08, 2014, 11:11:20 am If he's fast on track it don't matter as much to me. I don't want him silent or loud if he's slow on track. You can get too quiet. I once had a Vizsla that would only bark about once a minute and was a real loose dog. It was hell because the catch dog would have to find it himself once you got to it.
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: fonzie on April 08, 2014, 11:19:20 am I'm with t-dog if he runs it fast it ain't no prob it would be the same as a dog yelping on track to me... My dogs yelp in a real hot track this past weekend and bayed up 300yds later .... Now if he runs it slow ya I don't like that I'm not trying to see or hear a open dog run a track forever messes my other dogs up
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: NorthZulchNasty on April 08, 2014, 12:22:06 pm Thanks for all the input, I am going to run him a few more times. I think maybe he hadn't been off the chain in awhile and was real glad to get off. The next day he wasn't so mouthy. He is a walker dog, do they normally get more mouthy, less, or stay the same with age?
Title: Re: Open mouth dogs...Good or Bad? Post by: t-dog on April 08, 2014, 12:48:45 pm I love those hounds. I have seen all three scenarios. Time will tell.

I would not care if a dog was open or not as long as it found and bayed hogs. If you think a open dog can't bay hogs then you need to get around some better dogs.
